Hospital Affiliation: University Health Network (UHN) & Sinai Health System (SHS)
Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)
Description:
The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics of the University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health (SH) are seeking to recruit 2-3 academic general internists to be based at UHN (up to 2 positions) and SH (1 position). The successful candidate should have an interest in both inpatient and outpatient general internal medicine. They will also be expected to participate in educational activities at both the undergraduate and graduate medical education level. Candidates must currently hold or be eligible for a University of Toronto full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor and should fulfill the academic position description of a Clinician Teacher. Effective start date will be between July 2026, or sooner as mutually agreed upon.
The UHN Clinician Teacher position(s) (up to 2) will involve 75% clinical care, 25% scholarly activities and 5% administrative service. Clinical care is comprised of 24-26 weeks/year of clinical service, including: 10-14 weeks of CTU and 12-14 weeks of consults, hospital medicine inpatient service and ambulatory clinics, with informal clinical teaching while on service. Scholarly activities include formal teaching (40-50 hours per year across multiple learner levels with an emphasis on sustained excellence in teaching at the undergraduate MD and postgraduate MD levels; as well as creative professional activities related to education, including curriculum development and novel approaches to teaching & education, with evidence of impact outside local settings). Please note that while CTs are assigned a primary site (TWH or TGH); 4-6 weeks of clinical service/year will be spent attending at a secondary UHN site. The mix of clinical and educational responsibilities will depend on the successful candidate’s background and the needs of the Division. Competitive candidates will possess outstanding communication, teaching, organizational and interpersonal skills that enable them to work collaboratively with other physicians, learners, hospital staff and administrators. An interest in ambulatory medicine which at UHN is largely focused at our TWH site, is an asset.
The SHS Clinician Teacher position (1) will involve 75% clinical care, 25% scholarly activities and 5% administrative service. Clinical care is comprised of 24-26 weeks/year of clinical service, including: 8-12 weeks of CTU and 12-16 weeks of consults and ambulatory clinics, with informal clinical teaching while on service. Scholarly activities include formal teaching (40-50 hours per year across multiple learner levels with an emphasis on undergraduate MD and postgraduate medical trainees; as well as creative professional activities related to education, including curriculum development and novel approaches to teaching & education with evidence of impact outside local settings). Please note that this position is based primarily at SH; a willingness to attend up to 4 weeks of clinical service/year at UHN is an asset (recognizing that EMRs are not unified across UHN/SH).
Candidates must have advanced academic training that is relevant to their position description (master’s degree, doctoral degree or equivalent, see Table 2 on the Clinical Faculty Academic Appointments page for more details). Candidates must also have a record of excellence in their area of interest. For applicants being considered for appointment as a Clinician Teacher, excellence will be assessed by the presence of scholarly contributions to teaching and education as evidenced by pedagogical innovation, curriculum development, experience in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, and teaching awards.
