We are seeking a Senior Manager, Software Development to lead a high-impact engineering organization in Ottawa. This role is ideal for a hands-on technical leader who thrives in ambiguity, drives operational excellence, and consistently delivers results through disciplined execution and strong governance. You will own the roadmap, delivery mechanisms, and people strategy for an Android team and grow into managing multiple teams working on customer-facing products used by millions worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Delivery Leadership
Own end-to-end delivery of large, complex projects across diverse problem domains.
Build and execute team quarterly and annual roadmaps and support building platform’s that align to business goals and measurable OKRs/KPIs.
Lead through ambiguity, enabling teams to execute effectively even when problem definitions evolve.
Balance short-term tactical delivery with long-term strategy, ensuring consistent execution and quality outcomes.
Promote a progressive, iterative development approach from proof-of-concept to production readiness.
Partner with Product, Design, and TPMs to define vision, roadmap, and Technical Excellence priorities for key business initiatives.
Collaborate cross-functionally to influence product and engineering strategy across multiple organizations.
Drive Operational Excellence (OPEX): implement monitoring, incident management, and process improvements to increase availability, reduce defects, and enhance velocity.
Comfortably engage and manage incidents, drive reliability programs, or change management.
Measure impact, set clear expectations, and drive accountability at all levels.
Communicate clearly and frequently with senior stakeholders, providing transparency on progress, trade-offs, and impact.
Technical Excellence
Demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize, and drive long-term technical excellence initiatives for the verticals that your team owns — such as refactoring legacy components, reducing tech debt, improving observability, and strengthening reliability mechanisms — while balancing delivery commitments.
Proven skill in building mechanisms that continuously surface technical debt and operational risks, using metrics, retrospectives, and data from incidents or defects to inform roadmap trade-offs and engineering investments.
Strong technical judgment to align engineering improvements with business outcomes — influencing partner teams and senior leadership to allocate time, resources, and ownership toward maintainability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
People Leadership and Culture
Lead and scale engineering teams
Build, mentor, and develop engineering talent — cultivating a high-performing, diverse, and inclusive team culture.
Foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, and continuous learning — encouraging teams to “fail up” through experimentation and reflection.
Encourage innovation and operational discipline in equal measure — delivering high standards while maintaining speed.
Build an inclusive, diverse environment where every engineer feels empowered to contribute and grow.
Drive initiatives that raised the engineering culture and improved organizational mechanisms.
Hire, develop, and retain top-tier engineering talent
Basic Qualifications
BS in Computer Science or related field, or 10+ years of software development experience.
5+ years of engineering management experience leading 10+ engineers and/or multiple teams, including junior managers.
Proven record of leading through ambiguity and delivering results with minimal oversight.
Strong technical background in front-end or full-stack engineering: strong technical background in Android or full-stack mobile engineering preferred.
Hands-on understanding of architecture, CI/CD, testing strategies, and performance optimization.
Experience collaborating with global counterparts across multiple time zones.
Demonstrated experience with Agile/Scrum delivery models, quarterly planning, and cross-functional execution.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to bridge understanding across technical and non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to define success metrics for team and product performance and hold teams accountable to outcomes.
Skill in managing interpersonal conflicts, encouraging healthy dialogue, and handling high-stakes situations calmly.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing distributed or hybrid engineering organizations.
Proven success in fostering collaboration and alignment across large non-embedded product, QA, and service teams with a strong track record in project and stakeholder management — estimation, risk mitigation, and dependency resolution.
Experience balancing feature delivery with technical debt and long-term maintainability.
History of improving engineering velocity, quality, and operational performance through mechanism design and iteration.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities with bias for action and ownership.
