Position Overview
The Technical Engineer at JFE Shoji Power Canada Inc. will play a pivotal role in steering the innovation and excellence of the design review process in the Flat Stack Value Stream. This position will use their transformer experience and initiative to act as a technical specialist and advisor to the JSC business with respect to the manufacture of transformer/reactor cores and their associated designs.
Key Responsibilities:
Review and assess the electrical design, performance characteristics, mechanical structural integrity, and insulation design of dry-type and oil-filled transformer cores where appropriate.
Act as a subject matter expert in the magnetic properties, metallurgy, lamination coating, and application of the various types of electrical steels.
Interpret client design drawings, specifications, and core cutting configurations, and translate them into documentation used for costing and manufacture.
Work closely with clients on product design & materials selection and provide technical guidance on all aspects of transformers that JSC products are supplied into.
Interface with clients on technical clarifications, discrepancies, and any special application requirements.
Proactively identify risks at the quotation stage and mitigate in consultation with clients and JSC manufacturing teams.
Understand and assess client technical and organizational challenges and determine appropriate means of solution.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with existing and new clients.
Cross-functional team collaboration to define, prioritize, and maximize the productivity of the design review process to align with business goals.
Initiate and manage value engineering and cost reduction activities through standardization and "design for manufacturing" practices.
Active participation in R&D projects, client value projects, and continuous process improvement projects.
Maintain deep knowledge and understanding of JSC Best Practices, equipment capabilities, client specifications, and relevant international standards.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and innovation.
Mentor and train technical team members where appropriate.
Participate in ISO 9000 internal and external audits.
What You Bring to the Role:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or a related field) is required.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or equivalent certification preferred but not required.
5-7 years of experience in a technical engineering role.
Proven experience with troubleshooting, system integration, and technical documentation.
Strong knowledge of engineering principles, technical standards, and best practices.
Understanding of manufacturing processes, testing, and quality assurance procedures.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Attention to detail and a commitment to quality and safety standards.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under minimal supervision.
Adaptability to new technologies and changing environments.
Willingness to travel to client or project sites as needed.
