As a Staff Engineer you will be part of our small autonomous team using your experience and knowledge of a wide array of languages, technologies and best practices to evaluate and implement cutting-edge tools before they become mainstream. We are looking for top notch software engineers who are curious experimenters, great team players, and obsessive about making emerging technologies safe and accessible for enterprise use. You'll have the opportunity to work with the latest innovations in the software development landscape while ensuring they meet RBC's security, compliance, and operational standards—making an impact both by enabling exciting new capabilities and protecting the organization. What will you do? Evaluate and prototype emerging technologies, frameworks, and tools to assess their potential value and fit for RBC's technology landscape Lead proof-of-concept projects that demonstrate the safe and effective use of cutting-edge technologies in an enterprise environment Develop security frameworks, guardrails, and best practices that enable developers to use new tools safely while maintaining compliance with RBC's security and regulatory requirements Collaborate with security, architecture, and platform teams to create pathways for rapid but safe adoption of innovative technologies Build reference implementations and starter kits that make it easy for development teams across RBC to adopt vetted emerging tools Use your communication and presentation skills to evangelize promising technologies and educate senior leaders and development teams on emerging trends and opportunities Monitor the technology landscape continuously, staying ahead of industry trends in AI/ML, developer tools, cloud-native technologies, and software engineering practices Participate in or lead architecture reviews to ensure new tools integrate seamlessly with existing systems and support long-term strategic goals What do you need to succeed? Must have: Minimum 5-7 years experience working with large enterprise application development Knowledge and experience in a variety of programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, TypeScript, Python, Angular, Spring Boot, Flask, etc.) Experience working within professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source code management, build processes and testing Ability to quickly learn and evaluate new technologies, separating hype from genuine value Ability to simplify complex problems and communicate them in plain language to stakeholders and executives Strong organizational, project management and time management capabilities to work as part of a team or autonomously Experience balancing innovation with security, compliance, and operational concerns Nice-to-have: Experience in cloud platforms and technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Azure, AWS, GCP, etc. Experience with DevOps and SRE and related technologies, e.g. Jenkins, Ansible, Blue/Green deployments, Service Level Objects, etc. Experience with emerging technologies such as GenAI/LLMs, WebAssembly, edge computing, or other cutting-edge areas Active participation in tech communities, early adopter programs, or beta testing of new tools and platforms Experience in a matrix environment, such as a large, publicly traded corporation Understanding of security frameworks, vulnerability management, and secure software supply chain practices What’s in it for you?
