The Engineering Career Centre (ECC) connects University of Toronto students with meaningful professional experiences that provide a solid foundation for successful careers and life-long learning. In addition to hosting a wide range of professional development workshops, events and services throughout the year, the ECC team runs two work-integrated learning programs to connect engineering students with a wide range of industry opportunities. As passionate and career-driven academic professionals, the ECC team seeks to nurture students and provide a comfortable transition from academic to professional life.
Position Summary:
The Engineering Career Centre serves over 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, connecting them with meaningful professional experiences. With over 45 years of impact through its flagship Professional Experience Year (PEY) Co-op and recently launched Master of Engineering Co-op (MEng Co-op) programming, the ECC continues to be a leader in experiential learning in Canada’s career development landscape. Serving as a cornerstone of ECC’s internal operations, the Director, Operations ensures that systems and processes are aligned, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of the department.
The Director, Operations provides leadership and oversight of core operational functions that support all departmental units, including strategic planning and oversight, business operations, communications, data management, facilities management, financial management, and human resources.
Working within a collaborative framework, the Director ensures effective resource allocation to meet departmental priorities and emerging needs. The role is also responsible for developing evaluation frameworks to assess the impact and effectiveness of the ECC’s projects and initiatives.
Additionally, the Director leads special projects and contributes to strategic growth efforts, such as the launch of graduate internship programming and the development of a full-time job board initiative.
Requirements
Education:
Undergraduate degree and training in financial management or business administration. Graduate degree in business will be considered an asset.
Experience:
A minimum of six years of experience in a senior financial and administrative or operations role, preferably in a university environment. Demonstrated expertise in financial management, human resources and change management, with experience developing and implementing administrative and business processes. Experience planning, managing and implementing projects.
Proven understanding of co-operative education and demonstrated ability to meet the needs of students, employers, and industry partners. Ability to lead and manage within a complex and collaborative educational setting, articulate a clear vision and develop plans to achieve an integrated service model.
Strong people leader with experience managing staff in a unionized environment. Ability to deliver effective team management and leverage unique staff skillsets to deliver sound operational support for all deliverables of the Engineering Career Centre.
Skills:
• Excellent management and leadership skills; ability to mentor and effectively lead and manage change.
• Aptitude and familiarity with budget accountability, including forecasts and multi-year budget projections.
• Planning, organizational and analytical skills – in particular skills in managing both annual and sessional planning process.
• Project management skills; ability to direct large-scale projects, e.g. re-development of a website or selection of computer systems.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills to large and small audiences.
• Research, analytical and reporting skills related to current industry trends and best practices.
• Well-developed computer skills in word-processing, spreadsheet applications and presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.).
• Solid understanding of Data Management and Analysis.
• Knowledge and experience with a career-related database or CRM is an asset.
