Position Title: Body Apprentice
Position reports to: Location Manager
Position Summary: The apprenticeship program at Kirmac includes 4 distinct levels of development and experience, eventually leading to an individual earning his/her Red Seal Certification as an Autobody Technician. Each position level focuses on the various stages of Kirmac’s Accelerated Repair System (KARS). A willingness to learn and develop the necessary skills required for efficient and quality repairs are a key requirement for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Level 1 - activities include:
Damage Analysis System (DA) – Ability to perform the following activities:
Understanding and following the mapping on repairs
Maintaining a clean parts cart & tagging it with an RO#.
Bagging & tagging all parts, hardware and fasteners during disassembly.
Disassembly of parts from Domestic, Import and European vehicles to assist the repair and paint process.
Identifying and mapping visible and hidden damage during disassembly.
Efficiently remove and install parts and hardware on all types of vehicles.
Glass – activities include:
Repairing Rock Chips.
Replacement of ”bolt-in” glass on all types of vehicles
Panel Replacement – activities include the ability, efficiency and quality of the following:
New and recycled door replacement
Trunk, hatch and tailgate replacement
Fender replacement
Hood replacement
Bumper replacement
Bolt-on radiator support replacement
Test fitting parts prior to paint
Sheet Metal Repair – activities include:
Performing sheet metal repairs < 4 Hours.
Mechanical – activities include:
A/C discharge & recharge
A/C condenser replacement
Radiator replacement
Replacement of misc mechanical parts commonly damaged in collisions (air intake, exhaust/muffler, electrical pigtails)
Quality Control – activities include:
Ensuring each stage of the repair is completed to Kirmac’s standards for quality.
Completing the Quality Checklist after each repair stage.
Other – activities and abilities include:
Ability to use & understand a work order.
Understanding the advantages and disadvantage of Repair Vs. Replace.
Ability to solve problems before asking for assistance.
Level 2 – In addition to successfully performing Level 1 activities, Level 2 activities include:
Sheet Metal Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Perform sheet metal repair of 4-8 hours.
Structural Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Ability to use pulling equipment (Car-O-Liner, Wedge Clamp, etc).
Frame repair of < 4 Hours
Panel Replacement – activities include the ability, efficiency and quality of the following:
Door skin replacement
End panel replacement
Mechanical – activities include the ability, efficiency and quality of the following:
Front suspension components and assemble replacement
Rear suspension components and assemble replacement
Axle shaft replacement
Level 3 – In addition to successfully performing activities identified under Levels 1 & 2, Level 3 activities include:
Sheet Metal Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Sheet Metal Repair of 8-12 Hours
Structural Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Understand and use a 3D measuring system and vehicle specs (Car-O-Liner, Wedge Clamp, etc) to assist with repairs
Frame repair of 4-8 Hours
Panel Replacement – activities include the ability, efficiency and quality of repairing / replacing the following:
"B" pillar / Center post
"C" Pillar / Dog leg
Rocker panel
Welded radiator support
Level 4 – In addition to successfully performing activities identified under Levels 1, 2 & 3, Level 4 activities include:
Aluminum & Sheet Metal Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Sheet Metal Repair of 12+ Hours
Aluminum repair (select locations)
Structural Repair – Ability to perform the following activities:
Frame repair greater than 8 hours
Panel Replacement – activities include the ability, efficiency and Quality of repairing / replacing the following:
"A" pillar / Hinge pillar
Quarter panel replacement
Roof skin
Rear floor section
Red Seal Certification – Successful completion of the Inter-provincial Red Seal program and achieving a designation as a Motor Vehicle Body Repairer.
Qualifications:
Eligible to work in Canada.
Valid Canadian driver’s license.
Minimum of 1-2 years of industry experience or technical training preferred.
Thoroughness in accomplishing a task through concern for all areas involved, situation and/or work-related problem as a means of achieving optimal efficiency and effectiveness in performing job duties.
Ability to anticipate, identify, and define problems or difficult situation and develop an appropriate course of action.
Willingness to adapt to changing in work tasks or work environment; adjusting effectively while maintaining a corporate perspective.
Proven ability to work effectively with diverse personalities in a tactful, decisive, and resourceful manner.
Capability to achieve efficient, timely, quality results by directing efforts on expected outcomes while providing exemplary client service within expected timeframes.
Working Conditions:
Works indoors and outdoors.
Exposure varied weather conditions when working outdoors are expected.
Will work near moving mechanical parts.
Required to wear PPE occasionally such as respiratory equipment, steel toe boots, gloves & protective eyewear.
Standing for prolonged periods of time.
Occasional and indirect exposure to hazardous materials while walking the shop grounds.
May be required to drive customer cars when moving them around the shop.
Intermittent exposure to loud noises when in the shop.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions outlined above, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 30-50 lbs. occasionally.
