Job Title: Career Practitioner
Location: Corner Brook, NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position until March 31, 2026, with possibility of extension pending budget availability and satisfactory performance

Reporting to the Director of Employment Services, the Career Practitioner s responsible for assisting newcomers to Canada with preparing for, obtaining and maintaining meaningful employment in Newfoundland and Labrador. This role is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of job, employment, and career skills training for newcomer and immigrant clients seeking entry-level employment. The responsibilities also include facilitating labor market engagement, ensuring vulnerable newcomers access employment counseling support, and assisting individuals in navigating various internal and external educational and employment programs. The position aims to expand employment assistance, work readiness support, and entrepreneurship services for newcomers and employers in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, specifically in Corner Brook and the Western region. The office will focus on providing employment-based services and support to clients residing in Western NL.
Roles and Responsibilities
Assess clients’ education and past employment experience in the context of helping clients plan for and maintain successful employment in the Canadian labour market
Establish relationships with potential employers by assessing needs, developing a targeted plan and acting as a resource for organizations interested in hiring newcomers
Develop, maintain and coordinate a job and employment matching program which would match qualified job applicants to employment opportunities commensurate with the client’s skills, education and training
Develop a labour market strategy for newcomers, an innovative work plan for newcomer employment services which focuses on the Western NL region
Deliver and provide pre-employment, employment and job readiness preparatory training programs
Provide support such as career and employment counseling to facilitate labour market engagement and participation for newcomer clients
Regularly collect and maintain all pertinent client data regarding the program
Develop, maintain and distribute an updated list of employment, career, and entrepreneurial resources for newcomer clients
Prepare detailed progress reports as required
Assist with other related activities as assigned and as required
Qualifications and Experience
A bachelor's degree in Business, Education, Social Sciences or a related field (equivalencies may be considered)
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in counselling techniques, career planning, job search techniques and knowledge of the changing labour market
Excellent communication skills, written, oral, and presentation
Excellent organizational, communication, report writing, and planning skills
Well-developed relationship-building, communication, and presentation skills
Effective time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
Skilled in developing a working environment promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity for a diverse client group
Strong knowledge of pre-employment and employment training, and readiness strategies and approaches
Working knowledge of the provincial and Canadian labour market, and workplace culture and practices
Demonstrated experience in building and cultivating relationships both internally and with partner employers, stakeholders, and the community
Proven leadership and collaborative skills in community-based organizations
Strong technology skills (MS Office, G- Suite, Spreadsheets, Databases, Technology for Education and Learning)
Conditions of Employment
Legal authorization to work in Canada.
Flexible to work outside of standard core hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am -5 pm)
Valid class 5 driver’s license and daily access to a reliable vehicle is required
Ability to travel is required
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
