Your opportunity:
The Department of Economics ranks among the top economics departments internationally and is ranked number one in Canada. Nearly 70 per cent of all students take at least one course in economics during their undergraduate studies and our faculty is committed to educating and inspiring them all. Teaching and research in our department span a wide range of fields including theory, applied data analysis and econometric methodology. Located in the downtown core of Canada’s largest city, our department is immersed in a rich environment of rapidly expanding business and financial capital.
The Financial Assistant provides a wide variety of financial and grant administration support in the Department of Economics.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring department budget to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
- Preparing and/or processing journal entries
- Processing expense reimbursements
- Analyzing and recommending improvements to financial processes and procedures
- Processing payroll
- Troubleshooting and resolving payroll discrepancies
- Reconciling payroll distribution
- Generating standard financial reports
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years of recent and related financial and payroll experience, preferably in a university environment.
- Experience processing and reconciling financial, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll records. Experience preparing standard financial reports and maintaining financial files.
- Experience processing expense reimbursements. Experience maintaining databases and producing reports.
- Experience monitoring and reconciling budget and research grants.
- Thorough knowledge of the University's financial guidelines or other similar guidelines. Experience with interpreting and applying guidelines and procedures.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Access. Demonstrated working knowledge working with databases and producing reports.
- Advanced working knowledge with HRIS and FIS, Concur, or other related financial and payroll systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet multiple deadlines.

USW Pay Band 09 -- $67,916. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $86,855. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
