About The Role
The Associate Vice President, Credit Risk is a senior member of the risk function, reporting to the Chief Credit Risk Officer. The role provides end-to-end leadership for the bank’s credit risk governance. This includes setting and maintaining credit related policies, risk appetite and limits, and portfolio monitoring and reporting that meet regulatory expectations and support the bank’s strategic growth.
The AVP also plays a direct and critical role in credit adjudication by reviewing and recommending approval for complex commercial loans that exceed business delegated limits. Exceptional judgement and deep credit expertise are essential in preparing transactions for the Credit Committee and ensuring the bank maintains strong asset quality and disciplined growth. This full-time 1-year term position is based out of the Saskatoon, SK, Head Office but can also be performed remotely.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Risk Adjudication
- Evaluate and adjudicate complex commercial credit applications that exceed business delegated limits.
- Present credit recommendations to the CCRO providing sound judgement and analysis.
- Provide guidance and coaching to account managers and credit analysts to strengthen overall credit quality and risk awareness.
Credit Risk Governance
- Provide leadership and direction on credit risk governance.
- Manage and develop the Senior Manager, Credit Risk Governance, directing their work and ensuring quality of outputs.
- Develop, maintain and oversee credit risk policies, standards and procedures to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and industry practices.
- Review and challenge underwriting standards and sectoral limits to reflect evolving market, bank risk appetite and regulatory conditions.
- Oversee credit risk portfolio monitoring and reporting across all lending activities, including compliance with policies and limits, and escalates breaches as required
- Oversee the management of problems loans and watch-list accounts, recommending remedial strategies and provisions as needed.
- Oversee stress testing and scenarios analysis for the credit portfolio and integrate results into risk management actions
- Support ICAAP capital planning by ensuring the accurate assessment of credit risk capital requirements.
- Drive improvements in credit data quality, systems and processes to enhance risk insights and reporting efficiency.
- Ensure the credit quality of portfolios are maintained within the Bank’s risk appetite, risk tolerance, policies and procedures and meet lending guidelines.
- Proactively monitor emerging risks, external events, industry trends and stay current on regulatory changes and industry best practices to inform credit decision-making.
Other
- Provide expert input to product development, new market entry and other strategic initiatives with credit risk implications.
- Other duties as assigned.
About You
- Proven judgement in adjudicating complex commercial credits and structuring bespoke transactions.
- Strong understanding and experience implementing credit risk governance practices and regulatory requirements
- Strong communicator who can influence senior business leaders and credit committees with clear, balanced recommendations.
- Strategic thinker who links portfolio trends and macro developments to risk appetite and policy direction
- Collaborative leader who coaches and develops team members while driving high standards of credit discipline.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of progressive commercial credit risk experience with deep underwriting and credit risk governance expertise
- Track record of approving or recommending high-value, complex transactions across diverse industries and structures
- In-depth knowledge of credit risk governance, including policy design, risk appetite frameworks and regulatory requirements (OSFI)
- Three (3) years’ experience in a people management role
- Post-secondary degree in finance, business or a related filed or designation (e.g., MBA, CFA) desired but not required
