Position: Automation Design Specialist
Department: Engineering / Mechanical
About the Role:
We are seeking an Automation Design Specialist to join our engineering team, focusing on the design and integration of automated systems and tooling. The ideal candidate is a hands-on designer who thrives in a collaborative, high-precision environment and has extensive experience using SolidWorks within a PDM-controlled workflow.
You will be responsible for developing innovative automation solutions — from concept to fully detailed design — supporting projects that include part transfer systems, assembly automation, and robotic work cells.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and detail automation equipment and systems using SolidWorks in a PDM environment.
Develop concepts and 3D models for:
Part transfer and material handling systems (conveyors, pick-and-place, linear actuators).
Automated assembly technologies (DC screwdriving, adhesive/glue dispensing, pressing systems).
Custom fixtures and tooling with poka-yoke and ergonomic design principles.
Robotic weld and handling cells, including end-of-arm tooling and guarding.
Create complete drawing packages: assemblies, part drawings, and BOMs ready for manufacturing.
Collaborate with controls engineers, manufacturing, and project managers to ensure designs meet technical, cost, and timeline requirements.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support integration, testing, and troubleshooting of automation systems during build and commissioning phases.
Qualifications:
Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automation Technology, or related field.
3+ years of experience in automation or special-purpose machine design.
Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, and motion studies) and SolidWorks PDM.
Understanding of pneumatics, sensors, and mechanical motion systems.
Knowledge of robotic systems, particularly in welding, assembly, and handling applications, is an asset.
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail in design for manufacturability.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
