The Hallway Café is a social enterprise that provides vulnerable youth with a safe, supportive space and 17 weeks of employment readiness training while operating a thriving café and catering service. We combine exceptional food service with impactful youth development. As the Chef Instructor, your primary responsibility is to provide training and coaching to youth participants. Working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, the Chef Instructor is responsible for meeting café and catering outcomes and delivering an exceptional customer experience that encompasses a social focus.
Key Responsibilities:
Social Enterprise & Leadership
- Provide leadership and vision for the café and catering as a social enterprise.
- Train and supervise youth in baking, line cooking, prep, and café operations.
- Complete youth evaluations and development plans.
- Support program goals and contribute innovative solutions for a small enterprise with limited resources.
Café Operation & Catering Services
- Deliver an exceptional customer experience to café and catering clients.
- Plan and create menu items aligned with current trends and community needs.
- Ensure high standards of food quality, freshness, presentation, and safety.
- Monitor food preparation, provide coaching, and ensure consistency.
- Manage equipment maintenance, ordering, and inventory.
- Build relationships with suppliers, local farmers, funders, and key stakeholders.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and transportation of food.
Youth Support
- Build rapport with youth, showing empathy and compassion.
- Support problem-solving and barrier reduction within the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure youth understand café expectations and follow through.
- Complete weekly evaluations and participate in team meetings.
Health & Safety
- Follow and enforce Alberta OHS and agency standards.
- Train youth on equipment, safety, and sanitation.
What you bring to the team:
- Journeyman Cook or Baker certification.
- ProServe, Food Handling, WHMIS, First Aid/CPR.
- Minimum 3 years as a supervisor or higher with catering experience.
- Experience in baking is an asset.
- Previous leadership position in culinary field.
- Proven track record of cost control including food, equipment, labor, and wastage to meet financial goals.
