Job Description and Responsibilities We are seeking a highly qualified Senior Research Engineer to lead our steelmaking development research at our facility in Regina. In this technically challenging position, you will generate and apply steelmaking knowledge and related fields to topics related to electric arc furnaces (EAF), ladle metallurgy, vacuum tank degassing, tundish practices, and casting to impact processes and product development. You will be responsible for planning, managing, communicating, and reporting on laboratory experimentation, characterization of samples, process data analysis, modelling of the metallurgy and processes, and communicating or guiding such activities at Interpro Pipe and Steel Research and Development, Interpro Pipe and Steel production mills, and at other partner facilities. Technical project leadership for research and development (R&D) activities related to all steelmaking related processes and metallurgy Understanding and application of thermodynamic fundamentals and the modelling thereof (e.g., FactSage, Thermo-Calc) Development and implementation of solutions or process models utilizing both process data and fundamental understanding to provide guidance to mill operations Establish priorities through communication with internal stakeholders including R&D Program Mangers, Sales, Production, QA, and Technical Services Collaborate with external stakeholders including universities, government laboratories and other independent labs Provide project task instructions and guidance to R&D staff, technologists, and students Effective communication of R&D findings, results, and updates for audiences of varying technical levels Support R&D laboratory equipment use, development, operations, and maintenance Complete and maintain company-sponsored H2S Alive training (the Regina R&D facility houses an H2S corrosion testing facility) Requirements PhD. in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering with at least 4 years of industrial experience in steelmaking research, or M.Sc. in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering with at least 8 years of industrial research experience, or exceptional candidates with B.ASc . in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering with at least 11 years of industrial research experience. Preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. and strong knowledge of ferrous (steel) process metallurgy Knowledgeable in steel and slag practices and evolution as related to EAF, LMF, VTD, tundish, and continuous casting processes Experience with thermodynamic modelling (e.g., FactSage, Thermo-Calc) and process modelling Experience with statistical design of experiments and data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, Minitab, etc.) Knowledge of advanced characterization methods as related to experiments and industrial sampling for steelmaking processes is an asset Experience in steelmaking operations and/or quality assurance is an asset Strong English communication, presentation, and writing skills Ability to work in a cross-functional and dynamic team environment Ability to travel to various company, partner, or customer facilities outside of the work location will be expected and the ability to freely travel between the US and Canada is required Our total compensation package includes amazing benefits!
