The County of Grande Prairie is looking for a dynamic Supervisor, Health, Safety and Risk Management to lead initiatives that protect our people and our community. About the Role:
This position is responsible for providing knowledge, leadership, and direction to support continuous improvement of our safety culture. This includes developing and maintaining comprehensive health, safety, and risk management programs that align with regulatory standards and organizational goals. You’ll lead a team of professionals, provide support and guidance to managers and staff, and champion a culture of safety and compliance across all departments. From conducting risk assessments and managing audits to overseeing emergency response planning and insurance programs, your work will directly support employee well-being and contribute to operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Leadership
Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive Health, Safety and Risk Management (HSRM) system that contribute to departmental and organizational strategic goals.
Coach and advise managers, supervisors, and employees on health and safety issues.
Lead and mentor a team of HSRM professionals, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
Policy & Compliance
Create and update safety policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with legislative requirements.
Ensure compliance with insurance programs, policy renewals, and audit requirements.
Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
Maintain health and safety related metrics and reporting.
Incident & Emergency Management
Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses.
Develop corrective and preventive measures and coach leaders on implementation.
Maintain and test emergency response plans through drills and exercises.
Claims & Risk Management
Administer insurance claims and liaise with insurers and adjusters.
Monitor insurance coverage for County assets and ensure accurate reporting.
Act as liaison for non-profit community groups under the County insurance umbrella.
Collaboration & Training
Work with cross-functional teams to address safety concerns and promote best practices.
Deliver training sessions and coordinate safety-related events (e.g., NAOSH Week, Safety BBQs).
Participate in Joint Health & Safety Committee and municipal emergency activations.
Qualifications
Occupational Health and Safety degree or diploma
Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive health, safety, and risk management supervisory level experience, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment
Three years of progressively responsible experience conducting investigations and audits
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred
Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation or Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation considered an asset
Experience conducting training sessions and coaching at a cross organizational level
In-depth knowledge of Alberta's occupational health and safety regulations and codes
Proven experience in developing and implementing health, safety, and risk management policies.
Proficiency in using safety management systems, software, and tools to track and report safety metrics
Valid Class 5 driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract required
Additional Information
This position is 35 hours per week Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm with some flexibility and/or additional hours to attend meetings or meet operational needs. This position will be required to participate in the department’s 24/7 on-call rotation (approximately one week per month).

Pay Rate: $58.96 to $69.36 per hour.
