The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.
Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:
Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine, and mental health patients
New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety of health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, and plastics specialties.

Detailed Overview
The Booking Clerk performs reception duties, schedules and books patient appointments, registers patients and performs a variety of clerical and secretarial functions for the assigned clinic(s).
Responsibilities
Performs a variety of reception duties including answering the telephone, directing incoming calls as appropriate, taking messages, answering routine inquiries, providing information of a general nature regarding the clinic, and receiving visitors and patients.
Schedules and books outpatient appointments for the clinic according to established policies and procedures; receives appointment request or referral, makes follow up appointments, adjusts appointments as appropriate, and informs client of appointment times. Contacts appropriate doctor''s office and client and follows up on referrals and necessary diagnostic tests required for the appointment.
Registers patients upon arrival using a computerized registration system; obtains and confirms patient information and completes and enters related registration documentation.
Types technical and non-technical materials such as correspondence, medical reports, and various other documents, from handwritten draft or general instruction by utilizing a variety of software. Composes routine correspondence for signature.
Compiles and gathers statistics and information from various sources; enters data into computerized systems to ensure data is kept up to date; prints related reports.
Sets up and maintains filing systems for materials related to the clinic, patients, correspondence, reports, minutes and directories; creates files, labels, and files.
Processes incoming and outgoing mail, faxes, reports/records, couriered documents by performing duties such as receiving, recording, date stamping, sorting and distributing mail and preparing outgoing mail for pickup. Signs for receipt of packages and shipments.
Maintains timekeeping records for regular and casual staff and submits/enters to payroll system as required. Receives and processes requests such as vacation, leaves of absence and terminations by preparing necessary documentation and forwarding to the Manager, Clinical Services or designate for approval.
Maintains medical and office supplies and orders as necessary, according to pre-determined levels by methods such as photocopying, completing requisitions for signature and forwarding approved requisition to appropriate personnel. Maintains a clean and tidy supply area.
Arranges meetings/special functions by performing duties such as booking meeting rooms, ordering refreshments, sending invitations or contacting attendees, typing and circulating notices and/or agendas. Records, transcribes, and distributes notes or minutes of meetings.
Operates office equipment such as photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines; carries out minor maintenance such as loading paper, removing paper jams, cleaning glass, changing toner cartridges. Refers further maintenance required to appropriate personnel.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Grade 12 and two years of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to keyboard at 45 w.pm.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Ability to organize work.
Ability to operate related equipment.
