In collaboration with our consortium partner, Arctic Infrastructure Partners, Nunavut Airport Services LTD provides Airport Management, Airport Operations, Facility Maintenance and Technical Services for the Iqaluit International Airport.
Under a 30-year Public Private Partnership (P3 or PPP) concession with the Government of Nunavut, Arctic Infrastructure Partners is contracted to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the expansion and redevelopment of the Iqaluit International Airport.
Although more commonplace on the international stage, this is the first and only completed airport PPP project in Canada. And as part of this project, Iqaluit International Airport also became the first ISO 9001 Quality Management System accredited airport operation in Canada.
Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Reports to: Manager, Facility Maintenance

The Opportunity
Nunavut Airport Services is looking to hire a permanent, full-time Heavy Equipment Mechanic based in Iqaluit or on a rotational basis. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic ensures uninterrupted service at the airport by maintaining and repairing all airport owned mobile equipment, including firefighting vehicles, airfield snow removal equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, light vehicles, and stationary equipment.
Responsibilities include:
Perform preventative maintenance and inspections of heavy and light equipment to ensure high reliability, availability, and quality of mobile equipment: performing inspections of fluid levels, brakes, drive line, suspension, front end, and attachments for failure, wear or damage.
Conduct regular scheduled maintenance: oil change and lube, rebuild airport sweepers brooms, engine repairs, plow blade replacements, tire replacements.
Diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns: hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, and tires.
Weld, fabricate, and modify new and existing equipment, including modifications and updates to improve equipment performance or lifespan, using presses, grinders, MIG, ARC, and acetylene equipment.
Maintain a high degree of mindfulness when performing maintenance duties, to ensure a controlled, well organized work site, including an ongoing catalogue and inventory of all tools and equipment used.
Manufacture tools and equipment such as frames, supports, brackets, etc.; and
Outfit new equipment: installation of radios, lighting equipment, pneumatic control devices, etc. on vehicles and equipment.
Selection Criteria includes:
3-5 years’ previous experience as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic.
Education in a post-secondary, community college, or trade program for Heavy Equipment Technician.
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Interprovincial Journeyman Red Seal Certificate, or working towards it, is mandatory.
Demonstrated experience with repair on vehicle software, hand tools, electrical test equipment, hydraulic test equipment, air conditioning, precision measuring instruments, metal lathe, brake lathe, hydraulic press, metal shear, heavy equipment and light vehicle hoists, ARC, MIG, and acetylene welding equipment.
Aptitude to analyze mechanical diagnostics, and mechanical problem solving.
Physically able to lift up to 50lbs without assistance.
Possess strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as within a team environment.
Basic computer programs: MS office suite.
Experience with a computerized maintenance management system is considered an asset.
Ability to work shift work and be on-call outside of normal shift schedule
Working Conditions:
This position will be stationed in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Candidates must have the ability to work shift work and be on-call outside of normal shift schedule. Candidates must be willing to relocate to Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, or work on a rotational basis.
Condition of employment is the ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card and Clear Criminal Record Check
