Controls Specialist
We are seeking a highly motivated Controls Specialist to join our Product Development team. This role focuses on the design, programming, and implementation of control strategies for custom HVAC systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in DDC and PLC programming, a solid understanding of HVAC operation principles, and hands-on experience supporting controls throughout the product lifecycle—from concept and prototyping to testing, production, and field commissioning.
This is a highly collaborative role that works closely with mechanical, electrical, testing, and field support teams to ensure seamless control integration and robust system performance across all product lines.
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include:
Develop and program control logic for HVAC systems using PLCs and DDCs.
Design and implement configurable firmware/software structures to support diverse system configurations with a strong focus on product standardization for scalable products.
Translate HVAC sequences of operation into practical, reliable, and serviceable control strategies.
Support QA and validation efforts including unit control testing, simulation, lab testing, and agency certifications.
Assist field service personnel with troubleshooting, performance tuning, and commissioning support.
Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure design-for-assembly in control panel layouts and wiring harnesses.
Interface with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders to define control requirements and resolve technical issues.
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline; OR Technical Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
3+ years of experience in controls engineering, ideally within HVAC or building automation.
Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 PLC programming (e.g., Carel, Schneider).
Hands-on experience with BACnet, Modbus, LONtalk, and IP-based communication protocols (BMS system integration).
Strong understanding of HVAC systems, sensors, and control strategies.
Familiarity with electrical schematics, panel layout, and power distribution.
Knowledge of UL, CSA, and related controls/electrical safety standards.
Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic abilities.
Strong communication and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
Comfortable working with lab equipment, simulation tools, and troubleshooting platforms.
Ability to work independently and adapt to evolving project needs.
Valid driver's license and passport; willingness to travel within Canada and the U.S. (approx. 5–10%).
The preferred candidate for this position will have:
Experience designing HVAC control systems and developing sequences of operation.
VFD integration and tuning experience.
Exposure to IoT platforms, web services, or modern programming languages (Python, C#, Java, HTML, etc.).
Project management experience or formal training.
