Senior Medical Lead
The Senior Medical Lead (SML) is a senior Medical Affairs role that reports directly to the Country Medical Director. This role serves as the Team Lead for the Medical Scientific Advisors (MSAs) and Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) team for a given TA and works as a Partner to the Squad Lead in providing strategic input to the product squad. The Senior Medical Lead is accountable for developing and executing the Medical Affairs Strategy for the therapeutic area (TA). When applicable, the SML represents Medical Affairs on key committees including the Product Quality and Safety Committee (PQSC) and Issue Management Committee (IMC). The SML also provides strategic input to cross-functional partners including Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs and Market Access.
The Medical Lead is responsible for developing medical strategies and for providing strategic medical input to the entire Pharma organization including Customer Engagement, Product Portfolio, Squad Operations, Market Access, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Development, Medical Operations including Evidence Generation, Patient Support Programs and Pipeline Strategy. As a Member of the Medical and Scientific Affairs (M&SA) leadership team and the Medical Affairs Leadership Team, the SML provides strategic direction for the Medical Department. This role is also responsible for interacting with both Regional and Global Medical Affairs colleagues to provide strategic country input at these levels for the different TAs and to integrate global and regional strategy into local medical affairs plans.
The Senior Medical Lead also serves as the deputy and delegate to the Country Medical Director for final approval of external communication materials and on key committees including the PQSC, IMC and GRC for their respective therapeutic area. This role is also responsible for developing and maintaining strong internal and external networks in order to identify and address evidence generation gaps, emerging trends and customer needs. The SML will spend at least 30% of their time in customer facing activities.
By bringing valuable medical and scientific insights from across the TAs and from TLs, the ML will play a pivotal role in launch excellence and the success of the portfolio by delivering innovative, tailored and mpactful strategies that align with overall business objectives and health care provider needs and positively impact patient care.

What you will do:
• Accountable for the development and execution of the medicalaffairs plans needed for the products within their TA.
• As Team Lead, responsible for providing leadership and oversightof MSAs and MSLs within the TA.
• Using VACC principles, responsible for the coaching and subject matter training of the MSAs and MSLs for the TA.
• Act as primary medical affairs Partner for the Squad Lead to ensure effective development and execution of medical affairs plan.
• Accountable for ensuring that strategic input is provided into the development and review of regulatory and market access submissions as well as into responses to questions from Health Canada and CADTH.
• Accountable for ensuring that strategic country level input is provided to Global Development and Global and Regional Medical Affairs.
• Accountable for ensuring that strategic support is provided to the CMD for Medical Affairs financial & resource planning.
• Actively monitor the scientific and competitive landscape from a medical perspective including emerging trends in Medical Affairs,
digital landscape, evidence generation and competitive intelligence and determine how best to address these within the Canadian organization.
• Responsible for tracking and addressing trends identified from medical metrics, key performance indicators and dashboards.
• Together with the Medical Field Manager, responsible for ensuring the field level execution of medical plans.
• Identify data gaps and evidence generation needs for the TA and provide strategic input for the evidence generation, publication and
external scientific communication plans.
• Contribute to launch preparation of innovative products across within the TA
• Provide leadership to enable DSO implementation including 90-day cycles, shared objectives and accountability, dynamic ownership and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with Squad Leads in developing comprehensive Thought Leader (TL) plans for the TA.
• As a member of M&SA and Medical Affairs Leadership Teams, provide strategic direction for Medical Affairs. Participate in the local
decision-making processes related to developing strategies, plans and actions for the department and provide analyses and consultation on departmental issues/opportunities.
• Maintain a strong customer focus by actively developing and maintaining relationships with international and national TLs to
identify and share TL needs and insights and research opportunities.
• Act as the deputy for the CMD on key committees including the PQSC and IMC.. Also responsible for implementing any above-brand actions and external communications resulting from the committee meetings.
• Proactively build a strong cross-functional network with internal local/regional/global Bayer colleagues and represent Canada on regional and global teams where required to ensure that Canadian interests are addressed.
• Partner with the Head of Site Management in determining study feasibility assessments.
• Provide medical/scientific support in the evaluation of new inlicensing opportunities, where applicable.
• Act as the local medical affairs representative for the review and approval of patient support programs.
• Provide strategic medical input to the cross-functional team for the development of medical education initiatives, learning programs,
training programs and scientific symposia.
• Contribute to the development of white papers, publications and presentations.
Who you are:
• MD or other advanced/specialized degree in life sciences such as PhD, PharmD or MSc
• Minimum of 10 years of industry experience
• Visionary, Architect, Coaching and Catalyst (VACC) capabilities
• Proven track record in developing and executing medical affairs strategies
• In-depth knowledge of Health Canada guidelines and industry codes
• Strong relationship builder internally and externally – high level of integrity and trust
• Excellent communication and influencing skills – demonstrated ability to engage and build strong relationships with TLs
• Subject matter expertise within the TA is highly preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of medical and scientific principles, with the ability to interpret and communicate complex medical information
effectively to both internal and external stakeholders
• Strong analytical and strategic skills to develop and implement medical affairs strategies
• Able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including product squads, customer engagement, squad operations, market access, regulatory affairs, and clinical development, to ensure alignment and integration of medical affairs strategies across different departments and functions
• Demonstrated ability to analyze medical and scientific data to support the development of evidence-based strategies and initiatives
• Demonstrated learning agility with capacity to adapt to changing environments and learn quickly about new therapeutic areas, scientific advancements, and industry trends
• Strong customer-focus
• Strong negotiation and conflict management skills
