The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.
The Program
The Literacy and Learning Program is delivered at various sites for adult foundational learners who wish to improve their literacy skills in the areas of reading, writing, basic computers, skills for learning and/or to accomplish specific learning goals. Targeted learners are adult men and women who face social and economic barriers and who have been involved, or are at risk of involvement, in the criminal justice system. The program’s purpose is to increase literacy skills and prepare individuals for further learning opportunities by increasing confidence and motivation to learn.
The Position
Reporting to the Employment Hub Manager, the Literacy Facilitator works in an integrated and collaborative way with other adult serving teams within the agency. Building relationships with community agencies to ensure individuals have access to literacy services and supports, the Facilitator also provides 1:1 literacy and digital literacy tutoring for adult foundational learners (grade nine level or less), both onsite, in correctional institutions and in the community to enhance accessibility. Group facilitation of Essential Skills programming for incarcerated women may also be required intermittently. Individual tutoring activities will include assessing individual needs and literacy levels, preparing learning plans for 1:1 instruction, adjusting instruction to best meet learner needs, supporting individuals to reach their learning goals, increasing awareness of opportunities to pursue further learning and education, program marketing, data collection, database input, learner evaluations, outcomes reporting and evaluation and adherence to agency and funder reporting requirements.
