Why You’ll Love This Role We are seeking a Transport Sustaining Engineer to join our Engineering and Quality Transport Sustaining Team. You will take on the post-development ownership of complex, cutting-edge optical communications transport subsystem products, including WSS, ROADM elements, optical amplifiers, optical channel monitors, and super transport blades. This role focuses on delivering exceptional customer value by driving product quality, cost reduction, and production line support for products in the volume manufacturing stage. What You’ll Be Doing Product Ownership: Assume post-development ownership of WSS (Wavelength Selective Switch), Optical Channel Monitor (OCM), and optical amplifier products at contract manufacturing sites. Ensure product performance, quality, and reliability meet company and customer expectations. Technical Support for Manufacturing: Provide ongoing engineering support to contract manufacturers, resolving technical issues related to assembly, testing, and calibration of optical products. Analyze manufacturing trends and implement process improvements to enhance production efficiency and product quality. Failure Analysis and Problem Resolution: Investigate product failures at both the manufacturing and customer levels. Conduct root cause analysis using methodologies like 8D, 5 Whys, and FMEA, and implement corrective and preventive actions. Quality Management: Monitor and address quality excursions, ensuring manufacturing KPI targets (yield, scrap, cycle time) are achieved. Work closely with quality teams to implement initiatives that improve overall product quality and customer satisfaction. Change Management and Cost Reduction: Lead engineering change orders (ECOs) to introduce design or process modifications that improve product manufacturability or reduce costs. Collaborate with supply chain teams to qualify new components or suppliers while maintaining performance standards. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, global manufacturing teams, and supply chain management to ensure seamless product support and improvement. Act as the primary interface between contract manufacturers and internal engineering teams for technical escalations. Data Analysis and Reporting: Leverage data analytics and scripting tools to analyze production data and identify improvement opportunities. Prepare and present technical reports, manufacturing performance metrics, and improvement plans to stakeholders. Proactive Product Improvements: Identify and implement enhancements to product design and manufacturing processes that increase yield and reduce variability. Support new product introduction (NPI) teams by providing feedback on design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for sustainability (DFS). What We’re Looking For Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Optical, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field) or a relevant Science discipline Work Experience: 3+ years of experience in sustaining engineering, manufacturing support, or design engineering roles, preferably in the optical communications or photonics industry. Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of optical communication technologies and components, including Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS), Optical Channel Monitors (OCM), and optical amplifiers. Solid foundation in optical physics, electronics, and system integration. Experience with failure analysis and debugging at the electronic and optical level. Familiarity with quality tools and methodologies, such as 8D, 5 Whys, FMEA, and Pareto analysis. Experience working with contract manufacturers and supporting remote manufacturing sites. Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for resolving complex issues related to product design, manufacturing processes, and customer field performance. Ability to conduct and document detailed root cause analyses and implement corrective actions effectively. Data Analysis and Automation: Proficiency in data analytics tools and scripting languages to manipulate data and generate actionable insights. Experience with manufacturing data systems and tools for monitoring performance. Communication and Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate technical findings and drive cross-functional solutions with teams in R&D, supply chain, quality, and manufacturing. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and cross-functional environment. Change Management Experience: Demonstrated experience in handling engineering change orders (ECOs) and implementing cost-effective solutions that maintain product quality. Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and workflows. Knowledge of Manufacturing and Quality Processes: Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes such as optical alignment, assembly, and testing. Knowledge of manufacturing KPIs (e.g., yield, scrap, cycle time) and a track record of driving improvements. Additional Desirable Skills: Experience in NPI feedback and design for manufacturability (DFM) processes. Familiarity with regulatory standards and compliance requirements in optical communications. Experience working in global teams and willingness to travel to remote manufacturing sites as needed. Proficiency in software for project management, Agile workflows, and tracking (e.g., Jira).
