Sounds great – what’s the role in a nutshell?
The Deckhand is an essential member of the deck department, responsible for the general maintenance, cleanliness, and operation of the vessel's exterior and key equipment. This role reports directly to the Bosun and/or the First Officer and must maintain the highest standards of safety, presentation, and professionalism at all times.
Your passion is:
Vessel
Maintenance
and Cleaning
Execute
daily
wash-downs, chamois drying, and polishing
of
all exterior surfaces, including
superstructure, hull, stainless
steel, and teak.
Varnish, paint, and complete brightwork as directed
by
the
Bosun, ensuring
the
vessel's
immaculate
presentation.
Manage
waste and garbage
disposal in compliance
with MARPOL and company
environmental
standards.
Assist
the
engineering
department
with
basic
watchkeeping
duties
or
routine
checks as needed.
Watchkeeping and Safety
Perform
competent and alert
deck
watches
while
the
vessel
is at anchor or
underway, reporting
any
changes
or
observations
immediately.
Act as a lookout and steering
assistant
during
navigation.
Participate
fully in all safety drills, including
fire, man
overboard, and emergency
procedures.
Ensure
all safety equipment, including
fire
extinguishers and life
rafts, is
inspected and ready
for
immediate use.
Operations and Tenders
Assist
with
all
mooring and anchoring
operations, including line handling, fender
deployment, and splicing.
Operate and maintain
the
vessel’s
tenders and water
sports
equipment (jet skis, wakeboards, etc.).
Ensure
the
orderly and safe
storage
of
all
deck
equipment and inventories.
Guest/Crew
Support
When
applicable (e.g., on a yacht), provide
professional and discreet
service
to
guests as directed, including
setting up water
sports and assisting
with
luggage.
Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times when representing the vessel or the company
What are we looking for?
Valid STCW Basic Safety Training certification (as per STCW 95/2010 regulations).
Valid ENG1 or equivalent Seafarer Medical Certificate.
Experience:
Skills: Proven proficiency in line handling, knot tying, watchkeeping, and exterior maintenance (washing, waxing, and polishing).
Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent certificate is highly desirable.
5+ years
Previous experience as a Deckhand, preferably on vessels over 70 metres, or relevant experience in the maritime industry.
Fluent in English
Excellent physical fitness, ability to lift heavy weights, and work extended hours in various weather conditions.
High-standard Exterior Detailing (washing, waxing, buffing)
Stainless Steel Polishing and Brightwork
Basic Painting and Varnishing
Care and maintenance of Teak Decking
Managing and maintaining Water Sports Equipment.
