Scope and Nature
The SSUI represents approximately 20,000 fee-paying students at Sheridan College, advocating for their well-being and interests across academics, personal growth, culture, social activities, recreation, and community engagement. The 12-member elected Board of Directors provides governance, develops long-term strategic plans, and ensures that student perspectives are included in key decisions. Because Directors are chosen by the student body, a fair and transparent election process is essential to the SSUI’s ability to represent students effectively.
General Responsibilities
The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) supports the CRO in administering SSU Elections, ensuring fairness, transparency, and compliance. Responsibilities include supporting candidates and voters, monitoring campaigning and voting periods, and upholding election integrity. In doing so, the DRO directly supports the selection of student representatives, who will govern responsibly and uphold the interests of all students. Training will be provided to all DROs to ensure familiarity with election procedures and responsibilities.
Specific Responsibilities
Support candidates by serving as a primary point of contact, responding to questions, and assisting with candidate orientations and election events.
Review election rules and policies to clarify any ambiguities and ensure consistent understanding among candidates and voters.
Receive, document, and securely maintain complaints or concerns regarding election conduct, ensuring confidentiality and sharing sensitive information only with the CRO or other authorized DROs.
Monitor election activities, both on-campus and online, to ensure compliance with SSUI Election Policies; document and report observations to the CRO.
Assist in investigations of alleged policy violations by gathering information from involved parties and reporting findings to the CRO.
Collaborate with other DROs to ensure continuity of election-related tasks and support smooth operations throughout the election period.
Treat all candidates fairly and impartially; disclose any real or perceived conflicts of interest to the CRO.
Perform additional election-related duties as assigned by the CRO.
Required Qualifications
Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work within deadlines.
Strong leadership and communication skills, both in-person and via email; ability to interact professionally with candidates, the student body, and other stakeholders.
Proficiency in computers, spreadsheets, word processing, and email.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and performing efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
A general understanding of SSUI bylaws and election-related procedures is an asset.
