Job Description
This position supports a major hydroelectric project in New Brunswick and requires two weeks per month at the project office in Fredericton, NB. Travel and lodging expenses will be covered.
The Intermediate Cost Engineer is responsible for supporting cost control activities across engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC/EPCM) projects. This role assists in developing project budgets, monitoring cost performance, analyzing trends, and preparing regular cost reports. The Intermediate Cost Engineer works closely with planners, estimators, procurement, engineering, and construction teams to ensure accurate and timely cost management throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in cost engineering practices, strong analytical skills, and experience working on multi-discipline industrial projects such as mining, oil & gas, energy, and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Control & Budget Management
Track commitments, actuals, and incurred costs against the approved budget.
Monitor cost performance across engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
Validate invoices, progress claims, and contractor payment applications against work performed.
- Cost Reporting
Prepare weekly and monthly cost reports, including cost summaries, variance analysis, and forecast updates.
Highlight cost trends, deviations from budget, and potential risks to the project team.
Support the preparation of cash flow forecasts and cost-to-complete analyses.
- Change & Trend Management
Support the evaluation of change notices, change orders, and potential trends.
Analyze cost impacts of scope changes, schedule delays, and productivity variances.
Maintain the change management log and ensure alignment with project controls procedures.
- Earned Value Management (EVM)
Assist in performing EVM calculations and support integration between cost and schedule.
Analyze cost and schedule variances and prepare performance indices (CPI, SPI).
Collaborate with the planning team to ensure accurate progress measurement.
- Data Management & Cost Systems
Maintain project cost databases and ensure data accuracy and integrity.
Support implementation and use of cost control software/tools such as
Excel (advanced)
ERP systems
Project controls platforms (e.g., Prism, EcoSys, SAP, etc.)
Assist in developing cost tracking templates and reporting dashboards.
- Project Coordination
Work closely with project managers, discipline leads, procurement, and contractors to validate cost information.
Participate in project progress meetings and provide cost insights.
Support internal and external audits related to cost control.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, or related field.
4 years of experience in cost control, cost engineering, or project controls.
Experience in EPC/EPCM projects in mining, oil & gas, energy, infrastructure, or industrial sectors.
Relevant analytical and quantitative skills with high attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, dashboards).
Capability to work with cost control systems (Prism, EcoSys, SAP, Oracle, etc.).
Understanding of project progress measurement, forecasting, and change management processes.
Willing and able to travel and spend 2 weeks a month at our Fredericton office.
Minimum Requirements:
Master degree in related field.
5+years of relevant experience
Experience in EPC/EPCM projects in mining, oil & gas, energy, infrastructure, or industrial sectors.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with high attention to detail.
Familiarity with cost control systems (Prism, EcoSys, SAP, Oracle, etc.)
Strong numeracy and analytical problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and support multiple stakeholders
Effective communication and documentation skills
Organized, detail-oriented, and reliable
Ability to work in a fast-paced project environment
