About the Role
As a Mechanical Designer, you will develop automation processes and create complete design packages for custom automation systems. You will be responsible for producing cost-effective, high quality, and functional machine designs that meet customer specifications and project timelines. A key part of this role is delivering accurate, detailed drawing packages for manufacturing that support efficient builds and minimize rework.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop mechanical concepts and create mechanical designs in SolidWorks for automation systems
Research and identify mechanical components for projects ensuring they meet application and customer requirements
Provide guidance and direction to junior design members
Communicate with suppliers to discuss component specifications, pricing, and lead time
Interact with Project Management team and customer technical contacts to obtain clarification on customer specifications and to obtain customer information/CAD
Present concepts/designs at concept reviews, internal design reviews, and at customer design reviews
Create and assemble detailed drawing packages for the build team, with all necessary tolerance/dimensions, bills of materials, and assembly drawings
Document information for Customer Manuals: As built Drawing package, BOMs, spare parts lists, maintenance items, and OEM documentation
Identify, troubleshoot and develop solutions to mechanical build issues
Support the Applications group by developing concepts, calculating cycle time, estimating design labor, and estimating mechanical purchases
Develop RFQs for major mechanical system purchases and communicate with the supplier(s) involved
Work with manufacturing team to review drawing accuracy and identifying ways to optimize the design
Continuous development participation and implementation of BOS Standards for Mechanical Design
Weekly meeting with Mechanical Design group to discuss to group initiatives, priorities, workload, address any current issues or inefficiencies within the design group and generate solutions
Regular communication with Mechanical Design Group Lead to identify priorities and review status of projects
Attend White Board meetings to present status of design and hear status of other disciplines, as well as get updates on urgent issues
MEASUREABLES
Oversee all aspects of project related to Mechanical Design and ensure it is completed within budgeted hours, purchased component budget and within timeline provided
Communicate project status regularly with PM & Manufacturing Manager
Identify project requirements and delegate tasks to team according to skill set, ensuring that budget and timeline expectations are clear
Identify and communicate safety requirements with Systems team
Review delegated work of team members to ensure it meets functional requirements
Mentor and train junior employees in their role and on BOS Standards and Policies
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Timelines, budgets and quality achieved for assigned projects/quotes
Risks must be identified (Technical risks, budget overages, timelines, etc.), and work to be reduced or eliminated
Achievement of project goals for projects assigned
Task Tracker(s), Project Planner and QCC reporting systems maintained

You communicate confidently with suppliers, project managers, and customer technical teams, and you are comfortable presenting your work in concept and design reviews.
You excel at producing detailed, accurate drawing packages including BOMs, tolerancing, and assembly documentation that support efficient builds and minimize rework. You take initiative in identifying design risks, troubleshooting issues, and developing practical solutions. You work well independently and as part of a team, contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, and willingly mentor junior designers when needed. Organized, accountable, and technically strong, you thrive in a fast-paced project environment and take pride in delivering designs that meet timelines, budgets, and quality expectations.
