Scope
The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports its more than 85 member countries in advancing their sustainable development goals through effective laws, policies, and regulations for the mining sector. With a growing demand from our members, we are seeking support for our team, with a particular focus on legal and regulatory frameworks and dispute resolution and prevention, as well as at the intersections of other work areas of the IGF Mining Policy Framework.
Responsibilities:
Operations and Program Management
Collaborate with IISD staff, affiliates, partners, and consultants in the design and implementation of projects.
Participate in project missions, arranging elements of missions as appropriate.
Lead the organization and documentation of webinars, meetings, trainings, and public consultations as required.
Research
Conduct in-depth legal research on national laws, regulatory instruments, and jurisprudence, including case law from national courts and arbitral bodies.
Undertake policy and legal review and analysis of IGF member countries’ mining-sector regulatory frameworks to support program objectives.
Conduct primary and secondary research and write reports for the program, working with contractors as required.
Draft research and other project outputs to the required standard, including research reports, case studies, policy briefs, training, and technical reports.
Undertake analysis and evaluation of policies and programs, such as their objectives, impacts, and cost-efficiency, incorporating social, economic, and environmental considerations.
Keep up to date regarding emerging issues related to the program.
Develop evaluation criteria, methodology, and systems, and implement them in research studies.
Participate in virtual or in-person events to disseminate research findings
Communications and Outreach
Review reports or communications materials in a second language for accuracy.
Support the organization and documentation of webinars, meetings, training, and public consultations as required.
Identify and maintain contacts with domestic and international project partners.
Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
Qualifications and Education
2-4 years of relevant work experience in policy and/or research in the legal sector, preferably in connection with the mining or the extractives sector or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. A master’s degree in law, policy, or a relevant field related to the mining sector is an asset.
Demonstrated experience in legal research, project coordination and stakeholder engagement
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proven experience in legal research
Experience reviewing documents and synthesizing information for different purposes.
Experience analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
Strong research skills and the ability to become familiar with new topics quickly.
Superior writing skills and attention to detail
Ability to work collaboratively in teams on joint projects.
Fluent in English and French
Prior experience working with Africa or in an African context an asset.

Position Details
Location: Hybrid, Winnipeg
Candidates must hold an appropriate work authorization for locations where they expect to be based, without any sponsorship from IISD.
Salary: $47,000 CAD- $57,000 CAD Annually
Type of employment: Full time
