Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a senior Transportation Planner/Engineer to join our growing Mobility Advisory team in Western Canada. You will lead transformative, multimodal projects that integrate planning, policy, and engineering—from Complete Streets and active transportation networks to new/smart mobility programs (e.g., bike share and e-scooters). You will guide project strategy, author clear and actionable deliverables, and represent our clients in public and interested party forums. Arcadis provides flexible and remote work arrangements, career development opportunities, and a supportive, collaborative team environment.
At Arcadis, you will work alongside planners, engineers, and specialists in active transportation, transit, safety, traffic engineering, and modelling. We encourage involvement in professional associations and conferences, and support growth through life-long learning.
This role sits in our Mobility Global Business Area, (GBA). We partner with our clients across the globe to design thriving and connected cities and communities that enable opportunity for all and keep the world moving. Climate change, urbanization and digitization trends are requiring today’s mobility projects and systems to address an evolving set of demands from the world’s growing population. We design connected, sustainable solutions that integrate existing infrastructure with new technologies, and optimize the mobility of people and goods.
This position may be based in Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary, with flexible and remote work arrangements available.
Role accountabilities:
In this role, you will lead complex transportation planning and engineering assignments, setting the overall project vision, defining the scope, and determining the most effective delivery approach. You will be responsible for directing multimodal conceptual and functional design efforts, such as Complete Streets corridors and bikeway or micromobility facilities, ensuring that all designs are aligned with relevant policy frameworks as well as municipal and industry best practices. Your expertise will also be critical in overseeing policy reviews, conducting comprehensive transportation data and network analyses, and providing modelling inputs. You will synthesize these findings into clear background reports, needs assessments, network development strategies, and consultation summaries to support informed decision-making.
In this capacity, you will plan and lead public and stakeholder consultations, preparing engaging materials and presentations, guiding consultation specialists, and representing both the project team and the client during meetings and public events. Collaboration will be key as you work closely with colleagues across Mobility Advisory and other business groups, integrating perspectives on planning, engineering, safety, traffic operations, and placemaking to deliver holistic project outcomes. You will also be tasked with establishing and enforcing rigorous quality assurance and quality control processes, ensuring that all technical reviews meet or exceed established standards and that the project outcomes are of the highest quality.
Mentorship will form an important part of your role, as you provide guidance and support to junior and intermediate staff members. You will help with work planning, offer technical guidance, and deliver constructive reviews of project deliverables to foster professional growth within the team. Additionally, you will support business development initiatives by identifying new growth opportunities, preparing and presenting compelling proposals, and cultivating strong relationships with a diverse set of public and private sector clients.
Staying current with emerging trends in active transportation, road user safety, and innovative mobility solutions will be essential. You will be expected to translate these innovations into effective project strategies and designs, ensuring that your work remains at the forefront of the industry and continues to meet the evolving needs of clients and communities.
Qualifications & Experience:
University degree in urban/regional planning, civil engineering, or a related field.
Registered Professional Planner (RPP) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada; eligibility and commitment to obtain registration considered.
7+ years of progressive experience delivering multimodal transportation planning/engineering projects, with demonstrated leadership in project management and client service.
Proven technical writing, presentation, and public speaking skills; ability to create visually compelling reports and presentations.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Access, ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and data analytics platforms is an asset.
Strategic problem-solving skills with the ability to synthesize policy, data, and design to inform decision-making.
Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Ability to attend client and public meetings in person across Western Canada (e.g., Greater Vancouver Area) and travel as needed.
