Detailed OverviewProvides educational and clinical support to dietitians related to dietetic practice within the Food and Nutrition portfolio at Fraser Health (FH) for the majority of the time; acts a clinical dietetic resource to dietitians and other healthcare professionals and collaborates with the Dietetics Education Coordinator, Faculty of Land & Food Systems at the University of British Columbia (UBC) to provide education, research and instruction to dietetic interns within FH; organizes and manages the dietetic internship program placements within FH, in accordance with established policies and procedures; conducts and performs research and research-related functions to dietetic practice and provides research support to dietitians.
Responsibilities - Acts as a clinical dietetic resource to clinical programs, community programs/service and agencies regarding dietetic best practice, clinical guidelines and current literature.
- Creates educational opportunities such as workshops and online learning for dietitians; develops, reviews, revises, evaluates and implements education material for dietitians; designs specific educational workshops and tools to support Clinical Decision Support Tools (CDST), as needed.
- Supports the development, implementation and evaluation of research and educational programs to meet the needs of Food & Nutrition Services by conducting and participating in dietetic research; facilitates, conducts and coordinates practice-based research for Food & Nutrition Services.
- Organizes and provides education support to dietitians and dietetic interns within FH; provides clinical instruction and/or formal teaching to dietetic interns related to dietetic practice; develops and updates dietetic intern educational materials to reflect changes in clinical practice.
- Provides supervision to dietetic interns during placements in clinical practice settings; instructs dietetic interns in technical and therapeutic procedures related to nutritional care, diagnosis and treatment; organizes an orientation program for dietetic interns in order to familiarize them with the department and FH policies and procedures.
- Evaluates dietetic interns during the internship program utilizing the UBC modules and forms; maintains dietetic intern evaluation and research project records.
- Identifies learning outcomes, effectiveness of instruction and internship educational modules; provides recommendations to the Manager, Clinical Nutrition and UBC Dietetics Education Coordinator for areas of improvement/change; implements changes, as directed.
- Identifies and initiates quality improvement activities to support current practice and departmental changes; develops, communicates, evaluates and revises CDSTs; implements clinical guidelines/CDSTs as required in collaboration with the Manager, Clinical Nutrition.
- Provides assistance to Dietitian Practice Leaders to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) based on their review of existing care plans; provides recommendations regarding appropriate MNT, as needed.
- Develops clinical skill assessment tools to measure key competencies and other performance indicators; participates in the performance and skill assessment of staff; proposes recommendations or feedback on individual or group educational needs.
- Maintains related reports, records, statistical data, in accordance with established standards and procedures; attends departmental and committee meetings as a member of Food and Nutrition as required.
- Participates as a member of the UBC Dietetic Core Council to ensure that learning activities reflect current practice standards, provides the UBC Dietetics Education Coordinator with student progress reports, as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation, Training & Experience
Master’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or related discipline from a recognized educational institution, plus successful completion of an approved dietetic internship program.
Five (5) years' recent related clinical experience in general medicine/surgery/ICU in an acute care facility, including one (1) year experience in a supervisory/leadership role providing education/training to students and other health care professionals, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia and Restricted Activity A, B and C certificates.
Valid BC Driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.
