About the Role
These are volunteer positions. As a part of our mandate to build capacity to address the determinants of well-being and prosperity, AHC hosts free tax clinics In March and April of 2026 from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), where volunteers file tax returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.
The purpose of running the tax clinic is to help people file their taxes, get the benefits and credits they are entitled to, increase AHC’s impact in our community, and help improve our client’s quality of life.
Volunteers are an essential part of this program, and its impact and maintenance could not have been done without them.
Volunteer Roles
Role #1: Income Tax Filers
· Assisting families and individuals in preparing, reviewing and submitting their simple income tax returns.
· Providing tax return copies or sending out the tax documents by email for the taxpayer’s own records
· Responding to general tax-related inquiries while preparing the return
· Complying with CVITP guidelines, including confidentiality and privacy of tax payer’s information to ensure all client’s confidential information and documentation are kept secure with no exposure to unauthorized individuals
Role #2: Service Intake
· Greeting clients, creating a welcoming environment, and helping them feel comfortable and supported.
· Guide taxpayers through Tax-related questions and assist them in filling out the intake form.
· Screen whether clients qualify for the service.
· Collecting taxpayer’s required documents for tax.
· Scheduling appointments as needed to ensure client service is provided in a timely. manner
Qualifications:
· Having tax preparing experience, an accounting background and/or knowledge of income tax in Canada is preferred.
· Must be able to participate in volunteer training delivered by the CRA
· English benchmark level 5 and up will be preferred
· Comfortable working with computers or laptops
· Experience with or interest in learning Adobe Reader, Google Suite Office tools
· Willing to help clients from diverse backgrounds and accommodate their cultural needs when necessary
· No previous experience is needed. A willingness to learn is required - training and orientation will be provided.
· Loves to help others
· Must participate in volunteer training delivered by the CRA
· We are also looking for candidates who can speak a language other than English and French.

Commitment/Requirement
· We are looking for tax preparers and tax intake volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 5-6 hours per shift, and a meal will be provided during break time.
· All volunteers are required to undergo a police information check.
· All volunteer shifts will be in person at our office located at 10578 113 ST NW Edmonton, AB T5H 3H5. We may have other physical locations in Edmonton and those new additions will be communicated with the volunteers.
· Training, laptops, and CVITP E-file software will be provided. This training will start in early February once the volunteer screening is completed.
