Role Overview
The Heavy Equipment Technician – Power Generation is responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and performance of a power generation facility utilizing large reciprocating engine generator sets. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with informal leadership responsibilities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations.
The position requires performing engine maintenance and troubleshooting in-house, while coordinating specialized support from external service providers when necessary. The role also supports budget and expense processes through accurate reporting and contributes to long-term asset reliability planning.
While not in a formal supervisory capacity, this role plays a critical leadership function by maintaining strong relationships across teams and vendors. Their work is closely tied to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) performance, requiring ongoing engagement with field staff, technicians, and operations leads to ensure alignment, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Core Responsibilities
Engine & Asset Performance:
Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on large reciprocating engines and associated systems.
Execute preventive maintenance programs on schedule and within budget.
Optimize engine and plant performance to meet operational KPIs and reliability targets.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and asset records for lifecycle planning.
Vendor & Resource Coordination:
Identify and manage external resources for specialized work beyond in-house capabilities.
Oversee vendor activities on-site, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.
Budget & Reporting:
Support operating and maintenance budget planning and expense tracking through accurate reporting.
Provide detailed availability and performance reports to inform operational decision-making.
Operational Connectivity:
Maintain regular engagement with site personnel to stay aligned with operational realities and support HSE initiatives.
Collaborate closely with teams to implement and reinforce health, safety, and environmental practices through daily interactions and shared accountability.
Assist with operational documentation, tracking, and coordination systems to support team efficiency and record-keeping.
Health, Safety, and Environment:
Comply with all HSE policies and procedures.
Conduct hazard assessments and ensure safe work practices during all maintenance activities.
Actively participate in safety programs and reporting compliance metrics.
Travel Expectations
Regular travel to operational sites for inspections, maintenance oversight, and compliance checks.
Flexibility to support multiple facilities as operational needs evolve, maintaining connection with frontline operations.

Qualifications and Experience
5+ years of experience as a Journeyperson, Heavy Equipment Technician, or equivalent role.
Strong knowledge of large reciprocating engines and generator systems.
Experience with process piping, valves, and rotating equipment.
Millwright and/or Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic designation considered an asset.
Third Class Power Engineer certification considered an asset.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service documentation.
Proficient in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of complex mechanical systems.
Strong organizational and communication skills for coordinating internal and external resources.
