The Commission promotes and champions all Indigenous languages in Canada and supports Indigenous Peoples in the reclamation, revitalization, strengthening and maintenance of their languages so that no language is left behind.

Language – Indigenous and non-Indigenous – is at the heart of cultural identity; it shapes who we are and from where we come. When we speak our languages, we share stories, pass on knowledge and create bonds for generations.
Through the Indigenous Languages Act, the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages (the Commission) has been established to play a central role in supporting Indigenous peoples in their efforts to ensure their languages are reclaimed, revitalized, strengthened and maintained so that they may grow and prosper now and for future generations.
The Commission’s Governing Board is comprised of the Commissioner, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, and up to three Directors. The Commissioner and the Governing Board also serve as executives within the Commission’s organizational structure.
Purpose of Position
The Senior Operations Manager provides leadership, oversight and management of the overall operations of the Commission, which include Communications, Research, Innovation and Dispute Resolution. Reporting in the interim to the CEO/Commissioner, this role will have 4 direct reports, Manager of Communications, Manager of Research, Manager of Innovation and Manager of Dispute Resolution. The primary focus of this role will be to oversee all 4 operation departments to ensure all work cohesively and collectively to support the Commission.
Key Activities
Strategic Leadership
Contribute to and actively promote the Commission’s purpose, strategy, vision and values.
Manage and maintain key internal and external relationships - ensuring a clear pathway for the Commission around day-to-day service delivery enhancements.
Foster and maintain effective working relationships within the Commission.
Share in collective responsibility for Commission-wide strategy and decisions (for example, work programme and resource prioritization).
Collaborate and work with the Managers under their direction to provide high quality strategic advice and support to the Commission.
Provide support to Communications, Research, Innovation and Dispute Resolution Managers when needed.
Assist Communications, Research, Innovation and Dispute Resolution Managers to build their teams as needed.
People and Project Leadership
Build and maintain a positive, cohesive and high performing team, primed to deliver collective results.
Provide guidance, coaching and leadership to direct report managers.
Recruit and induct vacant Manager roles under their direction who will contribute to the vision and values of the Commission.
Apply various project management methodologies to oversee project performance, how to control and implement a process of change when needed.
Lead and reinforce a strong accountability culture which recognizes the need for strong leaders who coach and grow their people.
Allow Managers to effectively manage their respective teams, providing support when needed.
Relationship management and stakeholder engagement
Develop and maintain strong internal and external networks.
Undertake effective stakeholder engagement and relationship management.
Support the enhancement and growth of a cohesive organization.
Experience
Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with and/or between Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders.
Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of an organization.
Proven ability to work independently using sound judgement and initiative.
A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Be flexible and able to change direction quickly, managing risks and uncertainty when required.
Knowledge and understanding of and/or proficiency in an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) is considered an asset.
Qualifications
A relevant tertiary qualification and hold a professional designation/qualification from a reputable institution.
Five or more years relevant operations management of several departments.
Designated as Indigenous, substantiation will be required.
