The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has the largest concentration of research in the areas of cancer biology and molecular and developmental genetics. The department plays an important role in administration of the genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics core facility infrastructure that supports research activities in the Cumming School of Medicine, across Calgary and beyond.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Under the guidance and director of the Principal Investigator, design and execute experiments in Mitochondrial Dysfunction & Neurodevelopmental Disorders
- Projects focused on role of the gut-brain-microbiota axis in autism spectrum disorder and models of epilepsy
- Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
- Assists with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
- Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
- Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots complex problems with equipment
- Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices
- Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory space and equipment for various users
Qualifications / Requirements:
- PhD in Metabolism, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or other field related to nutrition and the gut microbiota
- A strong background in working with rodent disease models
- Should have a strong background in animal models, neuroscience, metabolomics, metabolism
- Demonstrated bioinformatics expertise is also an asset
- Knowledge of microbiota assessment and data integration are a must
- Metabolomics expertise is also an asset
- Demonstrated excellence in the form of peer-reviewed publications. High caliber with an academic and publication track record that would be competitive for national and international fellowships
- High level of effective organizational, time management and personal initiative skills along with excellent oral and communication skills are a requirement for this position
- Fluency in English, both written and oral
- Experience presenting to academic audience is required
- Manuscript and grant writing, review are an asset
- Previous experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students is an asset
