Westbrook Greenhouses Ltd. has two fully automated greenhouses with almost 1,000,000 square feet of combined greenhouse space. Westbrook is a large supplier of quality potted plants to the North American wholesale and retail mass market.
Job Overview
The Greenhouse Technician will be involved in all aspects of greenhouse production. This position will assist the Growers and Operations Manager with crop care, crop movement and production activities, including some minor maintenance tasks. They will work under the direction of the Operations Manager, Growers and Crop Quality and Innovation Manager to fulfill these responsibilities as needed.
Responsibilities
- Applies various pesticides (biological, conventional, etc.), plant growth regulators (PGRs) and fertilizers including mixing and application rates under the direction of the Growers and Crop Quality and Innovation Manager;
- Maintains detailed documentation of pesticides applied;
- Operates spray booms and greenhouse automation machines safely and effectively, troubleshooting issues and performing minor maintenance activities as required;
- Calibrates spray equipment and sensors as required;
- Runs potting and tray filling machines as required;
- Performs spacing/moving, sticking, potting and transplanting activities throughout the greenhouse as required;
- Communicates regularly with Growers and Management to provide information re: product flow, crop applications, irrigation needs, crop movement, and timing.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 3 years' greenhouse experience or horticulture diploma/degree and 1 year greenhouse experience;
- Grower Pesticide Safety Certification (or willing to obtain);
- Knowledge of greenhouse environmental control systems (preferably Argus) an asset.
SKILLS \& COMPETENCIES
- Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to work independently;
- Able to work in a professional and cooperative manner with co-workers and management;
- Team attitude and willingness to seek guidance and collaborate to solve problems on a daily basis;
- Good communication skills;
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook);
- Flexibility to work additional hours as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to stand 8 hours per day;
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs occasionally;
- Ability to push 50-100 lbs frequently;
- Working in a cool/ warm, humid indoor environment with moderate noise level and around moving
- Machinery;
- Available to work after hours and rotating Saturdays as required (overtime hours are paid);
- Must wear steel toe safety shoes/boots.
