Job Overview
The Senior Manager, Finance Operations is responsible for all areas relating to the claims payment process, accounts payable and eventually accounting receivable functions. This role is also responsible to for various finance reporting, account reconciliation, developing and maintaining related accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure the accurate and timely payment and financial reports. In addition, they will supervise a small team of accountants and are responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
The Senior Manager, Finance Operations should have the ability to address tight deadlines and balance multiple competing priorities such as payment processes issues, general ledger entries, financial \& management reporting, bordereaux generation and reporting, month-end close, yearend audit, GL reconciliations, trust accounting, and cash flow management/reporting. This role will liaise tightly with the operations group.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Senior Manager, Finance Operations are divided into three main areas:
Claims/Accounts Payment Process
- Manage financial operations; oversee claims payment, accounts payable processes and associated accounting entries.
- Ensure timely payments and address issues and discrepancies.
- Eventually manage accounts receivables
- Generate and analyze monthly financial reports and key metrics related to financial operations.
- Develop and monitor cash flow projections related to the payment and collection processes
- Maintain financial controls for financial operations and accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close.
- Monitor and troubleshoot claims treasury: bank account status, bordereaux are reconciled.
- Interpret financial information into useable management strategy and provide related advice.
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations monthly.
- Assist the Controller in the management of the year-end audit.
- Optimize financial and operational workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy of payment information.
Reporting
- Complete various financial reporting and support the generation of audited financial statements.
- Manage the account reconciliations and associated working papers to support Balance Sheet reconciliations
- Provide KPI metrics to the operations group.
Team
- Responsible for the day-to-day supervision and leadership of the Accounting team in coordination with the Controller \& CFO.
- Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
- Respond to inquiries from the CFO and the Controller and other senior management staff on various topics.
- Provide training to new and existing staff.
- Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year; monitor and provide updates on staff development.
- Special projects and workflow process improvements.
- Strong alignment with the Operations and Sales teams.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business with an emphasis in Accounting, or a related field.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Minimum five years' experience in finance and operations and/or senior accounting position.
- Proven working experience as Accounting Manager, Accounting Supervisor, or Finance Manager.
- Ability to manage employees while multi-tasking large projects.
- Exceptional knowledge of finance operations, accounting principles and financial reporting standards.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills; experience in accounting software (Great Plains), MS Office Suite.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize work and multiple competing deadlines.
Preferred Skills
- Experience managing a fast paced payment process
- Experience with software system troubleshooting and recommending improvements to processes
- Experience with software system implementation is a nice to have.
- Prior work experience at an insurance company, brokerage, or managing general agency.
- Experience with Great Plains software or other similar financial systems
