Description
The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Laboratory Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months(based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the lab. The Laboratory Manager takes responsibility for all aspects of the lab, including but not limited to: safety and compliance, instruments and equipment, users of the lab being trained, and restocking supplies needed to ensure that the lab runs smoothly. This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Oversight of the Laboratory
- Promote a safe working environment. Ensure that all lab workers have up to date safety training and documentation.
- Be a leader in setting an example for a safe workplace and positive lab culture.
Laboratory Operation
- Oversee laboratory safety and ensures that the laboratory remains in compliance with all University regulations.
- Monitor and updates lab collections, Chemical inventories, e.g., using Chematix.
- Improve laboratory practices and activities on a continuous basis by critically evaluating lab operations and performance, and looking for ways to innovate and improve.
Training
- Ensure lab users are trained on the correct use of the lab equipment.
- Ensures safety training has been documented.
Maintenance/Housekeeping
- Work with the B&Z team to ensure that the laboratory is cleaned and kept in an orderly manner to facilitate productive research.
- Submit work requests to the university for facility related repairs that are needed in the laboratory.
- Ensure all instrumentations/equipment is functioning properly.
- Oversee freezer de-frosting on a regular basis.
- Record keeping and archiving of yeast and plasmid collections.
Communication
- Develop communication strategies and plans to ensure that the right information goes to the right person or place at the right time.
- Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with students, staff, peers, immediate supervisors and senior management and with the department community.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Minimum M.Sc. degree required in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology with experience in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and lipid metabolism research.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic to work in the area of lipid metabolism and stress biology using budding yeast as model organism.
- Required to be knowledgeable in all lab techniques including the operation of high throughput equipment, organize yeast and plasmid collections, manage lab expenses and the training of users for new equipment.
- Able to demonstrate a record of a strong work ethic, successful supervision of trainees, while being in a cooperative and fast-paced work environment.
- Requires detailed record keeping and time management.
- Expertise in a variety of basic and specialized laboratory techniques and procedures, including advanced microscopy, protein purification, cloning, yeast genetics and functional genomics expertise.
- Experience in microbiological techniques.
- Skills and/or experience supervising and training students.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to learn and integrate new techniques & methodologies.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Strong communications skills required.
