Operations Administration within the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Learning & Instructional Design Specialist for approximately 12 months.
The Learning & Instructional Design Specialist reports to the Director of Student Experience with strong accountability to Faculty and department leadership, including; Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Head, and Associate Head. The Specialist will support the development of evidence-based pedagogy and teaching methods in Computer Science (with a focus on online and blended learning) and Data Science. This position requires an experienced and adaptable person with proven experience in online and blended instruction as well as in-person course design and implementation. A solid educational technology background and understanding of pedagogical literature and research, instructional design theory, especially as applied to computer science, data science, or statistics is expected. The ability to consult, advise and work with diverse teams and manage multiple complex demands is essential.
Normal work hours are 7 hours per day, 5 days per week. Flexibility in hours (working occasional evenings or weekend days) may be required to meet the needs of program constituents.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Consult with and provide instructional design and pedagogical support to faculty teaching online, in-person, and blended courses.
- Supports Faculty initiatives related to the implementation of learning technologies to enable the development of high quality courses and programs.
- Resolves specific and unique end-user issues for specified applications (such as Brightspace, Zoom, YuJa, and others).
- Encourage and foster faculty interest in the design and delivery of courses using emerging technologies, tools and platforms including D2L Brightspace (with all its associated tools), Zoom, Yuja, Top Hat, etc., staying current with new high-quality digital technologies that would enhance the Faculty's ability to deliver these programs.
- Facilitate linkages and collaboration between the Faculty of Science and the greater University of Calgary community engaged in online/blended teaching including IT (Information Technology) and the TI (Taylor Institute).
- Actively establish working relationships with faculty and sessional instructors involved in online teaching.
- Actively participates in, and collaborates to help lead, special projects to advance learning technology use and integration across the Faculty of Science
- Promote a positive culture of teaching and learning excellence in learning technologies.
- Meets deadlines and maintains a high standard of work produced.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with the Faculty of Science and IT, as well as across units at the university.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Master's degree in education, instructional design, e-learning technologies, educational technology, or curriculum design (or equivalent training in a related discipline.) Alternately, a Master of Science in one of the subject matter fields (Computer Science, Statistics) with experience in educational development, instructional design, learning technologies or related fields will also receive consideration.
- 3 or more years of instructional design experience in higher education using online/blended teaching and technologies, web-based training and instructional design is required.
- In-depth knowledge of, and experience applying, instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAMR, TPACK, Bloom's) and adult learning principles/theories.
- In-depth knowledge of instructional design, educational technologies, curriculum and course development, and pedagogical practices in online and in-person teaching and learning.
- Excellent, demonstrable knowledge of interface design, web-based resources, multi-media technologies, and learning management systems (i.e., D2L Brightspace.)
- Experience with Windows and Mac operating systems and Internet applications in a networked environment. Experience with other operating systems such as Linux an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts to faculty members and students to build their understanding and confidence in educational technology and online learning.
- Evidence of staying current on new developments within the fields of educational technology, online and blended learning, to respond to the changing curriculum development needs within the Faculty of Science.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and the ability to establish, maintain, and grow effective collegial relationships in a post-secondary environment.
- Proven ability to work independently but also in a highly collaborative fashion with individuals across the organization.
- Experience in project management an asset.
- Experience with e-learning authoring software (e.g., Articulate Storyline 360) an asset.
- Experience with course and program mapping and evaluation an asset.
- Teaching experience at post-secondary level an asset.
