Job Description
We are seeking a Director, Legal Services to assist the Chief Legal Officer in providing legal advice on a wide range of corporate matters. The ideal candidate will have litigation experience from a major firm, corporation, or government agency, with knowledge in areas such as Contract and Claims Management, Construction Law, Infrastructure Law, Insurance Law, and Indigenous Legal Issues.
What will I be doing?
- Leading litigation and dispute resolution efforts related to construction projects.
- Overseeing legal aspects of claims and litigation.
- Drafting and reviewing legal documents like pleadings and settlement agreements.
- Providing strategic legal advice on complex transactions and projects.
- Managing legal work within assigned portfolios.
- Representing Metrolinx in legal proceedings.
- Managing external counsel and making recommendations to senior management.
- Staying updated on relevant legal developments and communicating them internally.
- Conducting legal research on complex issues.
- Leading significant legal disputes and reporting to senior leadership.
- Advising management and government officials, including the Minister of Transportation.
- Maintaining awareness of applicable legislation and recommending policy updates.
- Contributing to corporate policies and providing proactive legal guidance.
- Mentoring junior lawyers and participating in leadership development.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Law Degree and membership in the Law Society of Ontario.
- Experience as a lawyer in a reputable law firm or legal department, preferably with government or provincial agencies.
- Strong issue resolution skills and strategic thinking.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Leadership and judgment under pressure.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
