Two Year Limited Term Assistant Professor (Teaching)

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a two year limited-term appointment as an Assistant Professor (Teaching) with an expected start date of July 1, 2025. The primary activity for faculty members in the Teaching stream is in teaching and learning (70%), especially in undergraduate programs. Scholarship (pedagogical and discipline-specific) (10%) and service (20%) are also part of this position.
The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching and coordination (both lectures and labs/tutorials, where offered) of our first- and second-year core courses, particularly in Biomolecules and Cellular Systems (BIOL 211), Ecology, Evolution, and the Biosphere (BIOL 213), Principles of Genetics (BIOL 311) and/or Introduction to Cellular & Molecular Biology (BIOL 331). The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching in and/or coordination of other courses offered by the department as required. In all courses duties include the design and development of lecture material, laboratories, assessments and other learning resources.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a discipline in the Biological Sciences relevant to the topics covered in our core courses. At least one-year of post-doctoral experience and/or one year of teaching experience in a post-secondary setting is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning as evidenced by established successes. We seek a candidate who uses contemporary approaches to teaching (e.g. active learning), has a strong commitment to evidence-based pedagogy as well as a broad knowledge of and interest in biological education pedagogy. Applicants should demonstrate a readiness to delivering course material both in class and online.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach to undergraduate teaching, and the ability to work effectively as part of a teaching team and within the department.
The successful candidate will assist in the goals outlined in the recently developed institutional "Ahead of Tomorrow" strategy and Faculty of Science strategic research plans. "Ahead of Tomorrow" is built around big ideas that will increase (student's) access to impactful and future focused education.
