Position Overview
Our success relies on having highly skilled field operators, so we have developed a training program that's one of the best in the industry. The Equipment Operator/Distribution Assistant will learn to use the tools and procedures required for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Gas Distribution system. You will assist in the installation of distribution pipes, fittings and related components and carryout repairs and alterations to existing mains or services, in addition to operating rubber tire back-hoe and/or excavating equipment.
You will learn welding and pipefitting skills, and will also be trained in safety, customer service and software applications. You will receive hands-on experience and coaching through classroom and on-the-job training to prepare you for advancement.
The Equipment Operator/Distribution Assistant will be trained in all aspects of emergency response.

Requirements
- High school/Grade 12 graduation/GED (education will be verified)
- Hold a current Class 3 Driver's License with a safe driving record.
- All of the qualification required of a Distribution Mechanic.
- Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate a backhoe around underground utilities.
- Ability to provide running maintenance on backhoes.
- Ability to operate and provide running maintenance on any of the following or similar equipment: trenching machines, mini excavator, portable cranes, side booms, skid steer, or any equipment which requires up to a Class 3 Driver's License (with air endorsement).
- Demonstrated safe work habits and adherence to safety regulations and practices on a sustained basis; have safe driving record and be able to pass FortisBC driving tests.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to become proficient in the use of power operated and hand tools, equipment and instruments.
- Ability to meet the public as a representative of FortisBC.
- Ability to obtain heavy trailer endorsement if required.
- May perform other related duties as assigned
Additional Information
- Considerable walking, bending and lifting
- Exposure to all weather conditions
- Preference will be given to applicants with experience operating rubber tire backhoe and/or excavating equipment in shallow construction
- Current Gasfitter qualifications (B ticket or higher) are considered an asset
- Welding experience/credentials are considered an asset
