About the role
This position is responsible for the sample preparation, extraction, sample concentration and clean-up in support of the low-resolution GCMS analyses. On a daily basis, this position is responsible primarily for routine sample processing preparation but is also responsible for aiding instrument-operating analysts as needed. This position also serves as a backup analyst for up to one routine sample analysis..
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform required sample processing (e.g. sub-sampling, microwave assisted extractions, etc.), following documented specific methods and procedures;
- Standard-making for up to two routine analytical standard sets;
- LRMS media management, including maintaining/monitoring stocks, ordering supplies, tracking shipments and samples returned for the LR-GCMS department;
- Perform routine maintenance to ensure instrumentation and equipment is in good working order;
- Calibration of analytical instrumentation;
- Carry out all required record-keeping and documentation;
- Maintain spare instrument parts in good working order;
- Evaluate data and trouble-shoot problems with the data/extraction/analysis;
- Interpret data, conduct calculations, and transfer data into electronic data collection software;
- Able to analyse samples for one routine method independently, as a primary analyst;
- Data processing, assessment, and reporting (LIMS and Excel) for up to two routine instrument methods, as a secondary analyst;
- Perform validations/verifications on laboratory equipment according to a set schedule;
- Communicate with team lead, senior analyst(s), and/or direct supervisor regarding workload, as required;
- Aid in the development and implementation of new procedures;
- Assist in other analytical sections of the lab as required;
- Organize workload to meet Turn around Times (TAT's) and hold times. Must be able to prioritize and multitask as many tests are run daily;
- Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment;
- Work in accordance with the established health and safety policies and procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
- Other duties as assigned.
About you:
- Organized, highly motivated, detail-oriented;
- Ability to work independently, or as part of a team, with minimal supervision;
- Ability to prioritize and multitask;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
- Strong English communication skills both written and verbal;
Required Qualifications:
- 2 or more year(s) of extensive lab experience, including at least one year processing data;
- Completion of technical diploma or B.Sc. degree in chemistry or related field.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift up to 30lbs and carry for short distances;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
- Ability to stand or sit for a full shift;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours.
