Job Description Summary:
The Associate Scientist I, Biology (Biochemistry) is responsible for performing scientific experiments that contribute to research and drug discovery activities at PTC. This position assists in early-stage research aimed at identifying New Chemical Entities (NCEs) and advancing research from screening hits to lead optimization. The incumbent communicates experimental results to supervisors and project teams.
The Associate Scientist I supports adherence to regulatory requirements and company SOPs.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Primary duties/responsibilities:

Under limited supervision, executes experiments as directed and communicates results to multidisciplinary teams.

Applies scientific principles and techniques to research problems.

Maintains detailed laboratory notebooks.

Contributes to the identification of new project areas or technologies.

Presents findings internally and contributes to publications, subject to approval.

Provides technical input to project teams or research leadership.

Contributes to patent development as appropriate.

Ensures safety compliance.

Supports lab operations including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and supply ordering.

Supports high throughput screening, including designing primary assays to identify hits and scaffolds.

Supports lead optimization through compound screening and SAR studies.

Supports in vivo studies and develops biologically relevant models.

Conducts mechanism of drug activity studies.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Extensive experience with HPLC, especially analyzing biological samples.
- Proficiency in flow cytometry and FACS.
- Experience handling human and mouse blood samples.
- Mammalian tissue culture and nucleic acid transfection skills.
- Knowledge of cell and molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA, protein purification, PCR, qPCR, and Western blotting.
* Education and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline with at least 4 years' experience, or Master's degree with 1-2 years' relevant experience.
* Additional skills and licenses:
- Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration skills in fast-paced environments.
- Knowledge of scientific literature, proficiency in MS Office.
- Strong communication, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
* Preferred skills:
- Immunoassay experience (Western blot, MSD, ELISA).
- Background in neuroscience.
- Experience in assay development.
* Travel: Up to 5%. Office/Laboratory based position.
