The role of a laboratory technologist at the EG-03 level involves supporting scientific and research programs in a high-throughput analytical laboratory. Key responsibilities include:

Preparing various types of samples, conducting chemical analyses using approved methods, and maintaining accurate records in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

The work requires handling hazardous chemicals and operating some instruments such as Ion Chromatography Analyzer (IC), Total Organic Carbon Analyzer (TOC), and Microwave digestion Systems, all while adhering to strict Health and Safety (HS) protocols.

The environment is safety-focused and physically demanding, involving tasks such as lifting materials (up to 20 kg), prolonged periods of standing or sitting, and potential exposure to dust or chemical vapors. Instrument maintenance, including routine calibration and troubleshooting, is also essential to ensuring continuous lab operations.

Beyond technical skills, the position demands strong teamwork, initiative, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced setting with limited resources.

Summary of Duties
• Prepare and process a variety of sample types for chemical analysis
• Conduct analytical testing using approved methods and laboratory instruments
• Maintain accurate data in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
• Follow Health and Safety (HS) guidelines, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipement (PPE)
• Perform basic instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting
• Work with and handle hazardous materials and equipment
• Operate effectively in a high-throughput, fast-paced lab environment
• Lift and move items up to 20 kg; perform tasks that require prolonged standing/sitting
• Communicate results and findings clearly, both orally and in writing
• Collaborate with team members and support departmental research initiatives
• Demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and reliability under pressure
Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to staff one term position within Natural Resources Canada. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and the pool may be shared with other government departments depending on operational requirements.

Experience

Experience working in a high throughput environment
