Detailed OverviewUnder the direction of a therapist such as a physiotherapist, assists in implementing and carrying out assigned safe patient handling program elements to meet the needs of staff and patients at the designated site. Functions as a support person to assist staff with safe patient handling challenges in an effort to provide safe patient care. Monitors therapy equipment such as mobility and assistive devices and supplies including maintaining inventories.
Responsibilities
- Assists in organizing, preparing and implementing safe patient handling program elements for staff and patients as part of an inter-professional team at assigned locations/units/departments; provides input into the implementation of patient mobility decision tools, documentation processes and other patient handling resource materials.
- Participates in safe patient handling practices by demonstrating, coaching and assisting staff with safe patient handling activities such as the appropriate use of equipment and assistive devices; provides input into the planning, implementation, modification and evaluation of current patient handling/mobility plans or program elements for assigned locations. Collaborates with inter-professional teams at assigned locations and Workplace Health regarding patient handling issues/concerns.
- Maintains an inventory of patient handling equipment and supplies; provides input regarding purchase of new equipment and supplies and notifies the appropriate inter-professional team when equipment requires maintenance or service and if inventory is low.
- Provides safe patient handling related education and functional skills training to staff with the goal of enhancing staff awareness and skill level regarding safe patient handling equipment available and facilitates appropriate usage of equipment such as ceiling lifts, floor lifts, bariatric equipment, hover jacks and slider sheets.
- Maintains and records up-to-date statistics of safe patient handling program activities for assigned locations.
- Liaises with new staff and staff returning from injuries to ensure they are familiar with new and/or revised patient assessments, mobility and transfer requirements.
- Observes and reports cognitive and functional changes in patient ability or behavior that may warrant a progression or regression of patient handling or mobility.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation and ExperienceCompletion of a Rehabilitation Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Valid BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.
