Your role You will guide programming decisions around breaking news events in the Yukon. Understanding the diverse communities that make up the Yukon is essential. As the Executive Producer of Daily News and radio programs, you are the go-to person on journalistic policy and judgement in the location. You are also a creative person, working with the rest of the leadership team, developing innovative forms of storytelling on all platforms. You will be expected to collaborate with the other Executive and Senior Producers and network news on major event coverage such as forest fires and elections. You will also be involved in daily staffing and scheduling decisions and employee feedback. Under the overall authority of management, and guided by the Local Services Strategy of Content, Community, and Culture, there is a regular and ongoing requirement for Executive Producers to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of others, effectively communicate the program or platform strategic objectives, and oversee the development of the team and its performance. Work must adhere to CBC Journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices, and the Executive Producer must lead their staff or units to ensure that this occurs. Key Tasks: Content Contribute to and oversee daily editorial, legal, and Journalistic Standards Standards and Practices (JSP) for online, radio and TV for the Yukon location, including radio current affairs content online. Provide strong direction through the day to the producer team on expectations around story coverage including length, deadlines, updates, treatments and value-added material, ensuring close collaboration between program units and news. Plan, organize, coordinate and monitor all Yukon news content to ensure breadth of coverage, variety of innovative treatments and quality of work throughout the day. Manage these various platforms in line with news and audience values. Lead and coordinate big breaking news events. Coordinate daily with Northbeat TV producers in Yellowknife, CBC North locations and as needed with Indigenous, Syndication and network news. Lead specials and series planning and coordination. Contribute to national JSP and other relevant discussions. Community Liaise with Communications and support CBC-sponsored events with newsroom resources on all platforms as appropriate. Attend community outreach events. Liaise with our audience on all platforms. Oversee internships and scholarships. Assist with Ombudsman complaints. Culture Participation in and support of CBC priorities including the Local Services Strategy, Dialogue Survey Action Plan, Performance & Development Dialogue, etc. Risk assessment oversight for field assignments, pro-active oversight of workload and safety in assigning. Long and short-term scheduling for daily and succession planning. Daily feedback re: performance, programming and content. Oversee staff development and individualized feedback plans. Oversee, monitor and approve overtime. Participate in the interview process. Oversee awards entries. Qualifications We are looking for a candidate with the following: A university degree or equivalent with seven years experience, of which five must involve work in a leadership role in a newsroom. Experience producing news on more than one platform is an asset. A passion for strong journalism, critical thinking, analysis and innovative storytelling. Ability to learn and use complicated technical systems and troubleshoot problems when they arise. Superior knowledge of Yukon, Northern and Canadian politics, geography and history. Demonstrated ability to lead a team and ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment. Solid journalistic skills with an understanding of legal and ethical issues. Demonstrated coaching skills with the ability to train new staff quickly. Ability and experience in leading the activities of a newsroom. Knowledge of CBC editorial policies, including mandates and CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices an asset. Ability to work flexible hours as required, including early morning, evening, weekend and holiday shifts. Ability to work within tight timelines, often in unexpected overtime situations.
