You’re tapped into local communities and you want to give the newsmakers, however big or small, a voice on multiple platforms. You listen and know that no detail is too small to get right. You ask why — a lot. You also love the craft of writing and have experience working in broadcast and digital formats. You doggedly pursue stories and feel comfortable working on your own. You also know that news is collaborative and you want to work as part of a team to provide the best content to the audience. You’re not happy with the bare minimum, and instead take every story one step further. You’re excited about the possibilities that multi-platform reporting offers. You may not know all of CBC’s tools but you’re technically adept and willing to learn. In this role, you’ll be reporting and reading newscasts for Up North, a radio show which is heard across the vast expanse of northern Ontario every weekday afternoon. You’re responsible for telling the stories of this sprawling region and connecting cities, towns and First Nations that might be thousands of kilometres apart. You’ll tell the audience about the daily news that’s shaping their region, while providing key survival information in a region where the weather is far from a background character. Working from CBC Sudbury, you bring together the biggest stories from your home newsroom and from your colleagues at CBC Thunder Bay. You carry the news agenda through the afternoon and help set the table for the next day by assisting with radio and online content for the following day and beyond. Key tasks: Pitch and chase original ideas that tell the story of northern Ontario Interview sources and write news stories for broadcast and digital platforms. Package, prepare and deliver radio newscasts and bulletins. Edit stories written by team members when needed. Identify potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations, and know how to appropriately act on them. Work comfortably under the daily pressures of a busy newsroom, collaborate with fellow journalists to bring stories across the line, and pivot when news breaks. Gather audio and video material in the field, edit and package it to share with the audience on any required platforms. We are looking for a candidate with the following: Experience and proven ability to write and voice concise and critical stories for radio. Experience lining up and reading newscasts and/or on-air presentation Experience working in a live broadcast environment. Demonstrated connection to and knowledge of northern Ontario. Commitment to serving the audience. Proven ability to work in a diverse team. Technical ability to self-operate radio control-booth equipment to record news reports and scripts. Excellent communication skills. High energy and enthusiasm towards journalism. University degree or equivalent preferred. Five years of experience in news media is preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company. Ability to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, late nights and weekends as needed.
