Who are we looking for?
Our office in Markham or Mississauga is growing and looking for a Senior Pavement Engineer to join our growing Canadian operations.
Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
Lead pavement engineering projects from concept through detailed design, including evaluation, design, and rehabilitation of flexible, rigid, and surface-treated pavements across highway, municipal, and private sector projects.
Provide technical oversight and mentorship on pavement investigations, data collection, condition surveys, laboratory and field testing, and analysis.
Deliver technically sound Pavement Design and Evaluation Reports, Asphalt Cement and Mix Design reviews, Pavement Asset Management Plans, and Lifecycle Cost Analyses in accordance with MTO and municipal requirements.
Lead pavement engineering contributions for Design-Build, Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), and alternative delivery projects, including pavement design optimization, value engineering, and durability assessments.
Develop and implement pavement engineering strategies that incorporate state-of-the-art practices such as mechanistic-empirical design, sustainability criteria, resilience planning, and emerging materials technologies.
Collaborate with geotechnical, transportation, and materials engineering teams on large-scale infrastructure programs across Ontario and Eastern Canada.
Support delivery and oversight of pavement investigations including borehole/coring programs, GPR, FWD testing, deflection analysis, subgrade characterization, and asset condition assessments.
Provide pavement design leadership on major transportation projects including rehabilitation and new alignments under the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and municipal design standards.
Grow GHD’s pavement engineering service offering through internal collaboration, market insights, and strategic pursuit planning.
Support development of proposals, pricing, scope definitions, and schedules in collaboration with Business Group Leaders and Project Managers.
Foster client relationships, represent GHD at industry forums, and maintain an active presence in technical and professional organizations.
Key Accountabilities:
Provide technical leadership and quality oversight on complex pavement design and evaluation projects.
Produce high-quality deliverables including design reports, drawings, specifications, and review of contract documents.
Demonstrated ability to influence clients and teams while contributing to a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
Actively contribute to business development strategies and maintain strong client relationships with public and private stakeholders.
Support recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of pavement engineering staff.
Promote innovation in pavement design approaches, data analysis, sustainability, and digital workflows.
Remain current with pavement-related specifications, codes, and emerging technologies, particularly those of the MTO, AASHTO, FHWA, and municipal agencies.
Participate in internal and external technical knowledge sharing and contribute to development of thought leadership.
What You Will Bring to the Team:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Pavement, Geotechnical, or Materials Engineering; a postgraduate degree is an asset.
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in pavement engineering, with significant exposure to MTO, municipal, and Design-Build infrastructure delivery.
Advanced knowledge of pavement design methodologies (AASHTO, MEPDG, MTO), condition rating systems (e.g., PASER, PCI), and material behavior.
Experience with pavement design and rehabilitation in various traffic, climate, and subgrade conditions, including highway, airport, and industrial applications.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Proven experience managing pavement-focused engineering teams and coordinating with multi-disciplinary project teams.
