Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design and implementation of I&C/Automation systems in all phases of medium-to-large, complex projects from planning to commissioning.
Develop design packages, including:
Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), riser diagrams, network architecture and control schematics
Loop drawings, control panel layouts, and installation details
Process Control Narratives
Equipment specifications, I/O lists, cable schedules, and bills of materials (BOMs)
Ensure all designs meet applicable municipal standards (e.g., City of Toronto, York Region, Halton), industry codes (CSA, ISA, NFPA), and client guidelines.
Delegate tasks, manage internal deadlines, work collaboratively across multi-discipline projects and monitor progress to ensure successful project delivery.
Define I&C/automation strategies, control philosophies, and system architecture for both new and retrofit systems.
Provide input in business planning and resource management across municipal and industrial infrastructure projects.
Implement professional knowledge and best practice to diagnose issues and propose the most effective and efficient solution for complex problems.
Make decisions and use problem-solving skills guided by operating policies, processes and procedures for GHD.
Works independently with minimal supervision applying sound engineering judgment.
Provide technical support during construction and commissioning, including submittal reviews, FAT/SAT participation, field inspection and on-site troubleshooting.
Participate in proposal development, cost estimating, and client presentations.
Develop and maintain client relationships and contribute to strategic pursuits.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
Required Qualifications (MUST Haves):
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is mandatory.
Minimum of 15+ years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering, ideally in municipal water/wastewater and industrial projects.
Proven experience delivering projects for Ontario municipalities such as City of Toronto, York Region, and Halton Region.
Strong technical knowledge in:
P&IDs and control systems design
Industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profibus, etc.)
Fieldbus architecture and instrumentation communications
Process and building automation systems
PLC/HMI/SCADA systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Emerson)
Control panel layout and fabrication
Security, access control, CCTV, and facility monitoring systems
Familiarity with Canadian and North American codes and standards.
Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate deliverables, timelines, and technical quality within multidisciplinary project teams.
Assets (Nice-to-Haves):
Experience with programming (IEC 61131-3: Ladder, Function Block, Structured Text), Ignition, Wonderware, or GE iFIX.
Exposure to OT/IT network infrastructure, wireless/cellular solutions, and cybersecurity practices.
Involvement in HAZOP studies or Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD and Revit.
Project experience in transportation infrastructure, social infrastructure, RNG/biogas facilities, and food processing facilities.
