Purpose of Position:
The Dispatcher plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient, timely, and cost-effective movement of freight. This position is responsible for coordinating driver schedules, assigning loads, communicating with customers and internal teams, and proactively resolving delivery or pickup issues.
The dispatcher ensures compliance with safety regulations, optimizes routing, and maintains service excellence by supporting drivers and the operations team.
Key Accountabilities:
Driver Dispatch & Coordination:
Assign and dispatch drivers for scheduled deliveries and pickups, ensuring efficient routing and time management
Route Optimization:
Plan and adjust routes to reduce travel time, minimize fuel usage, and meet customer delivery expectations
Communication Management:
Serve as the main point of contact for drivers during their shift; provide clear instructions and timely updates
Service Reliability:
Monitor shipments to ensure on-time performance and proactively address any delays or issues with appropriate solutions
Compliance & Safety:
Ensure all dispatch activities comply with federal and provincial transportation regulations, including driver hours-of-service rules
System Accuracy:
Accurately input and maintain distich records tracking information, and communication logs in dispatch and ELD systems
Customer Services:
Communicate with customers regarding freight status, delivery windows, and any issues, maintaining professionalism and responsiveness
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with cross-dock warehouse, and operations team to coordinate freight movement and prioritize urgent shipments
Problem Solving:
Manage on-the- road incidents or breakdowns by quickly implementing contingency plans and dispatching support when needed
Reporting & Updates:
Provide end-of-day summaries or updates to management on performance metrics, issues encountered, and improvement opportunities
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in logistics, supply chain, or a related field is an asset
Minimum 2 years of experience in dispatching, logistics coordination, or transportation operations
Strong understanding of transportation regulations, including Hours- of-Services (HOS) and safety compliance
Proficient in dispatch software, GPS tracking systems, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, especially in high-pressure situations
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Flexibility to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evening, or weekends if required
