Reporting to the Director, Engineering & Maintenance, the CONTROLS ENGINEER is responsible for planning, designing, developing, executing and overseeing electrical or mechanical control systems, equipment and machinery. He/She will examine plant processes and design/implement changes that improve the processes to increase efficiency and productivity. He/She will provide technical support of PLC based hardware and software, and utilize electronic and mechanical theories and principles to troubleshoot and solve problems.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide guidance and technical support to operations and maintenance, including troubleshooting, programming, component specification.
· Project management including design, estimate, purchasing, installation, commissioning, budget control, and all project communications.
· Research component upgrades and make recommendations.
· Design of new control systems and/or modification to existing systems. Ensure all documentation is up to date.
· Supervision of maintenance personnel and contractors.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Education
post-secondary education in Electrical/Controls Engineering or equivalent
Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEP) license, preferred
Knowledge/Experience
minimum 5 years working in a medium to large industrial manufacturing environment in an electrical/controls engineering role, preferably in the automotive industry
proven project management experience is required, including capital projects
proficiency in AutoCAD
proficiency in PLC. HMI, VFD programming (Siemens, Rockwell, ABB, etc.)
experience in batch weight, web handling processes a definite asset and advantage
Arc Flash and electrical work safety training
Knowledge of electrical code
Experience implementing safeguarding devices
Experience managing skilled trades and contractors in a unionized setting, preferred
Solid experience with MS Office suite of applications

Working Conditions:
· Position requires work in office and plant environments. Occasional visits to customer sites, job sites, and other production facilities.
· Standard 40-hr work week, but additionally may be required to work evenings, and weekends to accommodate business requirements including on an on-call basis when necessary.
· Domestic and International travel may be required – must have valid passport and the ability to freely travel across international borders.
· Exposure to powders, plasticizers, solvents such as MEK, etc. in a Chemical Plant environment
· Standing, sitting, walking, some minor lifting/carrying of product samples
· Use of PPE in production environments
· COVID protocols must be followed when appropriate, including the requirement to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
