The In Situ Applications Conformance team is looking for an ambitious and critical thinker to join its talented team of professionals and be a vital part of creating new and innovative techniques that will further incorporate the AER’s risk-informed and outcomes-focused objectives into our day-to-day decision making for the in situ sector. You will have the opportunity to look at our decision making and application review processes holistically, identify possibilities for enhancement and lead and execute on projects that enhance the quality and improve the efficiency of our decisions. This will require interacting with a large suite of technical and regulatory professionals throughout the organization, communicating with internal and external stakeholders, and mentoring staff. What your day-to-day will look like: Ensure a consistent application of risk and outcomes based regulatory controls across all technical disciplines during the review of applications and approvals conformance events for in situ oil sands projects. This includes reviewing and coordinating applications and performing desktop surveillance and audit activities as required. Understand and evaluate current approaches, trends, and limitations for the in situ sector, based on the results of approvals conformance activities and applications submitted, and apply that understanding to maintain, enhance or develop new business processes and guidance material. Identify new and innovative ways of using data and information collected by the AER throughout the life of an in situ project to enhance the quality and efficiency of decisions. Be able to interpret and translate information generated in reports, data visuals and dashboards to better inform decision-making and support innovation. Work with the in situ leadership team to prioritize which projects and actions the team should undertake to enable a regulatory decision-making process that is integrated, risk-informed and contemplates the life cycle of energy development. Advise, educate, coach and mentor team members on how to incorporate a risk-informed mindset into their reviews and foster an environment of technical excellence. What we’re looking for in you: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, geoscience, energy management, public policy, environmental science or resource management is preferred Applicants must have 7+ years of related regulatory experience within the in situ sector Able to act independently, exercise good professional judgement and apply critical thinking and problem solving abilities to execute on objectives and deliverables in an environment of high complexity, significant uncertainty, limited precedent, and which contains divergent views. Strong understanding of the AER’s regulatory system, government policy and the broader regulatory framework, including working knowledge of the Oil Sands Conservation Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and general knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessments, Water Act, and the Public Lands Act A team-oriented collaborator who believes in the importance of building strong relationships, teamwork, fostering a positive organizational culture, is comfortable mentoring and coaching Highly technical individual with expert knowledge of the in situ sector.
