Job Title English as an Additional Language (EAL) Tutor Job Description The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Tutor will provide academic support to international students enrolled in the Year One Foundation Program at the University of Alberta. This role focuses on tutoring students in English language skills, including speaking, listening, writing, and reading, to help them develop the proficiency needed for academic success. Main Responsibilities Reporting to the Program Director of the Year One Foundation Program, the EAL Tutor will be responsible for Providing one-on-one and group tutoring sessions for international university students to enhance their English language proficiency in speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Assisting students in improving their academic writing, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension of course materials. Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide feedback on their language development. Clarifying language-related challenges in coursework, assignments, and presentations using clear and accessible explanations. Helping students develop effective study habits and communication strategies for success in a university setting. Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence in using English. Qualifications & Experience To be considered for this role, you will need Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in English, linguistics, education, TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), or a related field. Strong proficiency in English language instruction, including grammar, academic writing, pronunciation, and communication skills. Prior tutoring or teaching experience, particularly with international students, is preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain language concepts in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner. Patience, adaptability, and a commitment to helping international students succeed academically. Awareness of language barriers and strategies for supporting students with varying levels of English proficiency. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively Location & Availability This position is based in person at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton. The successful candidate must be available to start in May 2025 and have afternoon availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It provides international students who do not meet direct entry requirements with an opportunity to gain admission to the University after successfully completing a three-term (one academic year) program.
