Environmental Monitoring Manager

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full time Environmental Monitoring Manager (EMM). Reporting to the Director of Environment and Climate Change, the EMM will lead and manage a team of professionals in planning, executing and reporting back on citizen and staff-led environmental monitoring projects, through the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Aski community-based environmental monitoring initiative. This role integrates both Western science and Métis Traditional Knowledge perspectives, including projects focused on wildlife, fish, and vegetation, species at risk, and climate change.
Key Responsibilities
Build and support a team of skilled environmental professionals to deliver environmental monitoring initiatives and projects through all stages (concept, design, proposal, implementation, evaluation, and reporting).
Support the Environmental Monitoring team in the effective design and delivery of community-focused citizen and staff-led environmental monitoring initiatives, with an emphasis on ensuring community voices and interests are reflected within environmental monitoring programs.
Build and implement effective processes for ongoing evaluation and enhancement of environmental monitoring efforts, with an aim to maximize value to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government
Design and direct public engagement activities, communications, and education plans involving environmental issues, including those that may impact Otipemisiwak Métis Government
Draft funding applications for relevant programs, secure funding for initiatives and projects, and manage obligations under funding agreements and contracts.
Manage budgets, deliverables, workplans and resources to meet the obligations under funding agreements.
Draft and deliver reports, briefings, speaking notes, and presentations.
Build and maintain strong relationships with governments, funders, industry, non-profits, communities and citizens.
Set strategic, professional, and departmental goals and objectives in coordination with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Environment and Climate Change Department.
Provide effective leadership, and mentor team members through feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations.
Manage staffing responsibilities and perform supervisory duties including hiring and training staff, assigning job duties, and developing and overseeing staff work plans.
Maintain a high level of political awareness, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
Support the Otipemisiwak Métis Government response to government and industry requests related to environmental issues.
Other duties as required or assigned.

Strong sense of ethics, professionalism, and political and cultural sensitivity.
Knowledge of Métis history, culture, governance and issues affecting Métis people.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, or related field. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
Minimum (2) two years’ experience in a leadership role, leading a team of direct reports.
Experience developing work plans and managing large budgets.
Experience delivering community engagement, including gathering feedback on communities’ needs, advising on plans to address them, and presenting them to multiple audiences.
Experience designing and implementing citizen-led or citizens science environmental research projects is an asset.
Experience with ArcGIS Online platform and associated products such as Story Maps, Collector, Survey 123, Field Maps, is an asset.
Experience working with Métis communities is an asset.
Other Requirements
Position will be based in office, with occasional remote work.
Ability to work regular office hours of Monday to Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, as well as a flexible schedule of days, evenings, and weekends.
Travel within Alberta and out-of-province is a requirement. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with advanced notice.
Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
